Can 1333MHz 8GB kit ram & single 1333MHz 8GB ram be used all together?

Hi,

I was wondering if i can use these 3 RAM modules together
(and if there'd be a performance improvement without stressing the other components):

Kingston DDR3-1333MHz

KVR1333D3N9/4G x 2
KVR1333D3N9/8G x 1

My MB is: msi z97-guard protection
CPU is: i5-4690
GPU is: msi GTX 560Ti Hawk TF III

I'm hoping this will help with photoshop, 3d modelling software & video editing.

O temple of tech gods, i consult thee!

Hi and welcome to SevenForums
I don't believe so
I believe you'd have to stick with 4gb sticks or 8gb sticks and not mix them

I also believe ps is more of a graphic's hog than a ram hog
If this is your card
MSI N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card - Newegg.com
1gb gpu is the bare minimum for ps so I would goose that item up to 2gb or 4gb for more performance
8gb of ram seems fine to me 2x4gb without the 8gb stick.

Yes, you can use the 3 sticks, but you most likey will not be running in dual channel, you`ll have to check the MB manual, some boards can run in dual channel with only 3 slots filled, but they have to be the right slots.

More memory is always better, but it`s best to get 2 8GB sticks, and please get something better then Kingston. But get what you can afford.

#1 Corsair Dominator Platinum
#2 GSkill Trident X
#3 Corsair Vengeance

And you graphics card is rather old.

Great card here, great price.

EVGA - Products - EVGA GeForce GTX 960 4GB SuperSC ACX 2.0+ - 04G-P4-3966-KR

And get some higher speed memory when you can upgrade, no need to go any higher then 1866.

Kingston seems to be the best for memory cards... also, the kingston thumb-drive survived the washing machine cycle xD (not mine)

attached some pictures from the manual.

Due to a series of bad decisions, i now have 3 ram modules. an 8gb kit and 8gb single of the same speed & cycle. I'm thinking of getting a gtx 970 when the price drops, but for now i don't have the budget. Of course, faster RAM modules will come later.

I was just hoping i could put it to use now since it's new.

Also i'll be sticking to MSI for zero potential compatibility issues :D
(the MB & CPU is new)

P.s. I like MSI's GPU open fan/card design, seems easier for heat to disperse without all the extra blockage layer.

Hi,
You can but I'd only use 2 of the 8gb sticks until you get a forth.
Even the manual shows either 2 or 4 sticks.

I've installed the single 8gb into DIMM 3. The 2 x 4gb into dimm 2 & 4

it states i have 16gb ram now.

What sort of potential problems will there be?

I never seen anyone mix gb sticks before or uneven stick numbers so you'd be the first doing both :p
As already stated by AddRam your running in single channel.
If you bsod I guess you'll know why ;)

Check the manual, see if there is any way you can run in dual channel with 3 sticks, if not just put the 3 sticks in and see if your memory score changes at all.

It doesn't state anything about that... but i've installed it and it appears to register fine..

Attached photos show that i now have 16 gb ram

8gb kit in dual-channel slots, single 8gb in one of the left over dual slot

There is absolutely nothing wrong with what you did, don`t worry about it, nothing bad will happen.

The only down side is not running in dual channel, no big deal right now, get the other 8 GB stick as soon as you can and put it in there, you`ll be back to dual channel and all will be fine.

If you have no idea what dual and single channel means then read up on it at google.

Not sure why you put the sticks the way you did, I can`t see the color of the ram slots from that manual.

But you should have the 2 4GB sticks in the 1st 2 same colored slots, whether that is slot 1 and 2 or 1 and 3. Most likely it`s 1 and 2, then put the 8 GB stick in slot 3.

Always use the slots closest to the cpu unless the manual tells you different. But if it indeed does say to populate 2 and 4 first, then leave it how you have it.
