The BSOD is of no relevance to the present situation. Everything depends on what was done when the computer was "wiped". It can have different meanings.

Whatever, let your friend use Glary Utilities portable version (run from a pendrive so that she need not install the program on the system which may overwrite the previously existing files) and check whether the files are shown as good and not overwritten. If she is serious about recovering the deleted files, she should forthwith stop using the system till data recovery is completed one way or the other. Otherwise that data may get overwritten and become irrecoverable.
