60% of companies to skip windows 7, according to this article. some of them because of budget issues, others because of compatability issues. still looking better than vista's history at this stange I think, well unless those remaining 40% decide to downgrade to XP like some corporations did with vista. that's just on the business side, but I think it will different on the Home front, for instance gamers seem to like windows 7 so far.

I would imagine it would be a big job for firms to make the change , possibly having to retrain staff on how to use the new OS. Not forgetting the overall cost.

People tend to get set in there ways and tend to stick with what they know when it comes down to making money. So its not really surprising to me that most firms will swerve the upgrade, and as they saying goes " if it ain't broke...dont try and fix it".

Regardless of how good Windows 7 turns out to be, companies are struggling to stay afloat in these tough economic times. Upgrading OS and software is not on their priority list. Bottom line; if it works and it ain't broke, leave it alone until things get better. I am the IT Manager of a good size company and that is the approach we are taking.

40% rolling it out through 2010 isn't bad, especially given all the extra work and testing and potentially upgraded machines, etc., it means.

For a lot of places, at least for now, if it ain't broke don't fix it. Many places are fine with web use and email, etc., and don't really need big upgrades beyond that.

Bet it goes up by 2011 though once places let others play guinea pigs and they get better deals on new technology, etc.

I used to work for a very large global company. In my particular office, we were about a 50-50 mix with WinXP and Windows Vista when I left. Unfortunately, I was chatting with the guys that I used to work with and the parent company when they signed the agreement with MS on software assurance...they did not go with the option to use Windows 7...so with over 50,000+ desktops...they aren't going to deploy Win7 when it comes out. Their plan is more or less move desktops to Win7 as they buy new desktops from Dell which come with a license for Windows 7. Pretty sad considering how much better Win7 seems to be over Vista at this point.

It all depends on Microsoft's support for XP. My company was in panic mode when Microsoft announced they were stopping support for MS SQL 2000. We were forced to upgrade all applications to be comp. with MS SQL 2005. I imagine companies that upgrade hardware will get Windows 7 on the new hardware. Also client OSes will be dependent on the server OSes also.

the economy situation is probably playing a big role in this too. also if something is running fine why change it, for example still many of the banks and airplines use IBM OS/390 operating system that's over 50 years old, with a DOS like interface, but it works for them so why change it... also many banks still run OS/2 on some of the PC Servers, which is an exctint OS lol, never the less it does what it's suppose to, so they keep it running...

until there is actually benefits of moving to a newer windows version there is not point then, at least for the larger companies. I work for a large one(55k employees worldwide)

The time to go through all them and then take all the calls in afterwards of people not knowing wtf they are doing on the new OS is enough to deter anyone from moving forward. There is nothing wrong with windows 7, just not worth spending millions of dollars to upgrade to it

True But then at this point why would IT departments need MS support for XP? they are maintaining status quo and are experienced with its use. They likely do not need much support.

In India and neighboring countries, 90% of the companies will still use xp no matter what comes their way. The main reason for this is they are very used to XP and doesn't wanna allow any change.

That is a NON issue to support XP....

only problem is, soon it will be expensive to maintain XP, as microsoft will only give payed support for it..

"akramh:171817", I agreed with you earlier post but after an anaylisys of our suituation 115+ users here are the sums as calculated (would appreciate your comments)....

We are currently mixed (XP pro 32bit and Vista Ult 64bit and Vista 32bit PRO) the costs are as follows....
Cost of the WIN7 packs (we will NOT use upgrades reasons you will be aware of) + Upgardes where required + Installation Cost + Training of users + Loss of Productivity + Downtime (24/7 house).
The amount over the 115 system is approx NZ$3000.00 per system/user.

END RESULT out of busines.

It looks you need some help there. You are telling migrating 115 computers to Seven would cost you about NZ$345 000 (€170 000 or $255 000).

If you are interested, I'm willing to give you an offer of that job. Even if I pay a team from here to there to do the job, you can still save a lot of money and I can make a nice profit.

You are getting some bad and false advice from your consultants. That must be the case; I would not like to think you deliberately gave us wrong figures to make your point.

Sincerely, very sincerely,

Kari

I would go there myself, if I only had the time. It's over 8 years now from my last visit to the beautiful Kiwiland.

The offer is valid. With those figures there is money to make to both parts.
