Solved Non win7-sys apps open only tiny window & text

Hello! Once upon a time there was a windows update. Yup, caused problems.


Pretty sure it wiped out my older system restore points (could be me of course but not likely on this).



So with that fix useless, am left with apps which startup via an .exe or a shortcut (Not win7 system apps) that opens the app fine but is a small to tiny window with tiny text .


The odd (maybe) thing is these apps (registry/data clean/malware) when opened in safe mode, just work dandy as can be, with the large window and easily readable text as they always have been in the past.


So go figure, eh? The right click with properties & size changes I have tried from research have not worked. Same with drag the sides etc.


Anybody got a thought on this weird one?

Could your screen resolution have changed?

The safe mode uses a low resolution - so stuff looks big.

Also, if you can stand it - avoid using registry cleaners.

Safe mode low resolution: Interesting. Looks like Big clue for sure!

Registry cleaner avoid: Yup the standard! But all those pieces of S... are not contenders. Good safe proven ones fine.

Old apps don't always allow you to change their size.

If an old app creates a screen that is 300 pixels by 300 pixels, then you can probably see the info inside of it while in the safe mode (which is 800 by 600). That 300x300 window would take up half of the screen's width. It would look really large.

In the normal mode, the screen resolution might be 1600x900. That same 300x300 app window is now tiny.

However, since you mentioned that other windows look normal, perhaps a resolution change did not happen.



As far as cleaning the registry. I've not found cleaning to help. Let me know if you find otherwise and let me know how you determined that it helped. I would like to try and duplicate the changes.

Resolution: Ok, got the resolution basic idea, I guess. So what do you think checking the current resolution, noting it of course (old fogies like me do forget easy), then go up one level and recheck fully then down one level and recheck to just see what happens. Hmmmm?? BTW there is only one (1) app that can be considered "old".

Registry: First thing is obvious backup, backup, backup!! Both registry & windows system restore. And take initial Caution!

First thing is I am not going to name the registry cleaners I wound up using right off, JUST so some one does not merely see the name and go for it without first reading all that follows!!!

Yup in the past with lots of no! no! NO! on using registry cleaners.

So on registry cleaner's I relented & did none but later for a then unknown reason my PC sloooowed to a crawl. I had to try something so I did "everything" else first, then painstakingly took out registry entries that came up to clean on a particular program One-by-One. Really boring, but eventually my puter started picking up speed. And finally was back to its perky self.

So just that "E" registry cleaner I deemed to be a good one. Then in my search of all the claimed good r-cleaners I finally came across the "R" registry cleaner. It had two options. One was "auto" but that messed me up bad. So went to the "g" (my control) option. In the G option I could choose the types of & individual keys it showed were bad (& that I wanted to delete). After research on registry key types, that worked real well. I took the safest out first and tested a few times. Then the next type and so on.

Result?? Well once you get your system cleaned you really cannot notice a difference (it seems to me). So when there is no obvious operating problem people seem to think registry cleaning does little or no good. I would too EXCEPT for my own experience noted above. I KNOW personally it DOES make a difference if enough of a build up of dead-end key paths occurs.

So I would say from plenty of experience that with all precautions in place >first and foremost< while it may seem to not make much or any difference, it does/can make a difference after time. If one does very little uninstalling well then probably then such cleaning will make little/less difference. So its a situation specific reality.

About 90% of the time I just use the "E" clean. Then much more seldom do a "R" (my control) clean.

That is about it. If you want the names I will post them but if private communication is ok here that would be best. I just want to be sure someone does not "go for it" with out taking the precautions first.

Sure - write down the current resolution setting.

Then take a look at the list of possible resolution settings.
One of them might have "(recommended)" by the setting.
You should probably use that one - if you are not already.

If you want to see what it looks like, choose a lower set of numbers.

I suppose that I should ask:
Can you change the size of the window for the old app?
If so, does making it bigger help you to see the info inside of that app?

re: reg cleaners.
It is good that you were able to get your computer to go faster. Maybe someday I can stumble across the key or keys that can cause that. I've just not found them yet. If you ever run into that again, save the log of changes that were made

OK, guess your talking about paint versus snipping tool. I could not get Paint to take the shot is the main problem. But right now I am studying & documenting the Win7 forum posted using Paint TUT. Will advise, Tks

While doing that, please list some of the programs showing this symptom. For programs like games, you can try ALT+Enter to make them fullscreen. For some apps F11 will help too.
