Is there some setting which makes the screen dim when it's not nearly all white?

I'm working in one maximized window, which has an all white background and some text. If I switch to another window which has a light background, even near white, then switch back to the "white" window, there is a very brief pause before the screen gets brighter again. I never notice the brightness dimming when I switch to the off-white window, but when I switch back to the white window, the screen suddenly brightens.

TIA.

Maybe your power settings.

I had to pick maximum performance under the graphics section to get rid of something similar.

I am not sure that those settings will change things for you and your "NVIDIA Quadro FX 2700M".

I opened Power Options from the start menu and got a very different window. I had a choice between "Energy Saver" and "Power Saver" because, apparently, in Redmond there is a different "energy" and "power" (I will have to discuss this with my Physics Ph.D. friend). What a pair of choices, huh?

After searching, I found a "High Performance" setting.

Edit: It had no effect.

If it is really annoying, then change the NVIDIA drivers. Even if it means using an older version.

It says AMD Radeon HD 8450G.

I notice a Roll Back Driver button. Maybe that will help?

You could try a roll back. It might help. It should not hurt anything.

It could hurt something after all. First, it set my resolution to the lowest possible level -- something like 10x20. I fixed that up, but now it won't recognize two monitors? The monitor is plugged in.

How can I get multiple monitors back? (And how does one work without them?)

Interesting. Sad, but interesting.

I guess that I'll suggest that people not roll back.

Have restarted the computer since the roll back?

Install the latest drivers from here.

I find that it is hard to lug around multiple monitors in a laptop bag :-)

Yes. I tried restarting with the monitor plugged in and without the monitor plugged in. I check all the cables on the monitor and the laptop. This is, frankly, amazingly poor quality programming from our friends in Redmond and whatever city my graphics controller company is located in -- I mean, stunningly low quality (and it's taking a ton of my time, too).

This problem just appeared out of the blue, probably after a system update, and only gets worse when I roll back. I mean -- wow! What else is there to say (I'm just venting now).

Oh, and I too can't fit a monitor in my laptop bag (though I have a new bag coming in the mail soon -- we'll see). That's why I have an extra one everywhere I work (I would prefer to use a PC with a monitor and full-size keyboard, but that seems barely possible anymore).

I'm open to more suggestions -- anything, really, that will make this work. Pleeeease help me.

OK, I was going to upgrade the drivers per a previous post, but decided to first try a trick that used to work in the fine Windows Vista -- uninstalling the driver, then rebooting like five or six times. So, after wasting half my day on MS' fine OS and AMD Radeon's fine device drivers, I am back to being able to use two monitors and, I think the original problem has gone away, too. Sheesh!

Your SF Specs show you have NVIDIA graphics - see screen print below.
Here is a tutorial that can help with seeing what you have and updating SF specs:
