Svchost.exe is eating up the CPU resources

Hi!

For a month or so sometimes after the startup svchost.exe is eating up the CPU resources.

Today (using Process Explorer) I finally found the exact culprit that was eating about 13% of the CPU right after startup, it stopped after a couple of minutes but it's irritating nonetheless.

Service: wuauserv

Start address: wuaueng.dll!DllInstall+0x57c0

This wasn't happening ever before (except for the last month or so). Can it be fixed?

Do you have Windows Update set to automatically install updates?

No, I don't, I have it set to notify me and then I choose what and when to download and install.

Perhaps it is related to GWX (Get Windows 10) activity or other telemetry.

It is definitely checking for Updates. Now, I haven't bothered troubleshooting mine, but Windows Update doesn't let me know if there are new updates for at least a month now. Did you open Windows Update to actually see if there are any updates ready to be downloaded and installed?

GokAy, you are right on the money! That is the problem! Windows stopped notifying me as well and I just checked for updates and there they are, waiting to be downloaded and installed - but Windows didn't notify me.

What's the deal with this?!

I am not participating in CEIP. And I have uninstalled and hid the GWX advertisment update.

As I told, I didn't troubleshoot it myself (manually checking the updates). But my laptop stopped also. I have all updates installed (even GWX updates). I suspect the culprit is one of the GWX ones.

Just a quick note to say that I had the same issue for a while but wasn't too bothered. I keep an eye on any new updates anyway. What fixed the notification issue was installing an earlier version of Windows Update Client (at the risk of breaking WU even more) but for me it worked.

Edit: I do not have any Windows 10 Upgrade Updates installed.

Hm, that's interesting. And pretty stupid too (from Microsoft I mean). I woud like to get back the update notifications but don't really want to install the older client.

I will never update to Windows 10 on this PC so if that's caused by a W10 compatibility update I'd like to know which one. I have only uninstalled the telemetry ones and the GWX one.

All i can do is give you a list of updates that I have not installed or else have removed.

You said you fixed the problem by reverting back to the older Windows Update Client. How did you do that, which update have you uninstalled? I'm not sure how safe is that but am curious. Thank you.

If you are going to attempt any changes like that you really need to create a system image backup first.

You may try Windows Update Notifier if it helps. It's portable so runs without installation. I've tried it and set it not to start with windows. It runs an update check and notifies when updates are available.

Thank you but I don't want a 3rd party tool for Windows update. I guess I'll be checking manually every month. Lame Microsoft, lame.
