How can I export entire Win 7 registry via cmd.exe?

Hello,

I know that via cmd.exe "reg export" can export individual root and sub keys to folder locations as files, but how can I export the entire registry through this method? I know it can be done through GUI via regedit.exe by clicking export.

To transparently export the registry to a text file, click Start, in the search box, copy and paste regedit /e c:\output.txt , and then click OK.
File named output will be created on C drive
You're done, see attached pdf
Save that in a safe place and rename it as you wish.
Be carefule if you plan on messing with your registry!!!!!!

But that will not export the entire registry.

Open the output and you will probably see nothing under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SAM]

There are many area that are not available to a user. Even an admin user. If you want to export the SAM key, your command prompt needs to be running with System credentials.

And there are hives that the registry does not normally open... like the user hive for those not currently logged on.

Well All, the output file has been in the analyzing mode for 10 minutes using Word with unicode format. It is 440mb way too big for notepad. I'll post again later, I'm hungry

I use Registry Backup from Tweaking.com. This FAQ
convinced me. It uses Volume Shadow Copy to back up the entire registry even though it is in use. It is simple to use. The backup may take anywhere from 1 to 1 1/2 minutes since it takes awhile for the VSS service to make a snapshot.

I don't think there's any other way to get the whole shooting match without manually just copying all the registry hives. Easy to make a mistake especially if you are a bit up tight because your system has gone weird.

Hey All, I am unable to get my word app to successfully open this 440mb file. I have racked my brain non-stop searching ms bulletins and forums. Tried running compatibility mode for XP and vista, no luck. Anyway, I need to spend some time on the phone with a mortgage loan processor and must prioritize that right now. I'll try this on my old xp machine later.

Well folks it is true, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SAM is there but empty.

I don't have time to play now, it only took what 2 hours for word to analyze and populate 3.3 million words and it reached the limit for number of pages at 32,524. I won't be doing that again unless it's for me. I thought rendering video edits was a bitch, this sucks.
MilesAhead, I doubt that ERUNT program will accomplish this feat, but I may be entirely wrong.

Mine was the "326" copy file that you see below.

I made that larger ("980") via copy/paste/save...
...then closed notepad and opened the "980" file via double-click.




I tested with cmd running as System before making my first post to this thread. It does get the SAM keys, but it will miss others.

No one has offered a method using the app that the OP suggested; but I doubt that it can be done. Better ways to backup the entire registry have already been posted. Let's see what the OP's end goal is before spending much more time on this.

Well Laddy da da! Just Kidding You got lucky and I need to change the max page # allowed in both apps and figure out how to speed up the analyzing process. Any thoughts? I know more ram and ssd are in the shopping list but I aint spending money while it does not pay me back.

An SSD will cause the most speed increase for notepad. Notepad does not paginate, so no need to change any settings. Deselecting Word Wrap should help. Having more than 4GB of RAM probably won't change anything for this particular task.
