svchost.exe takes all cpu power from time to time

hi, i noticed this's happening regularly recently, especially after boot. it generally last for 1-2min. after opening process explorer, i can see it's related to "netsvcs". since it's happening on my computers suddenly, and since i ddin't install any suspicious thing, i wonder if it's not due to windows update..?

It is the latest version of the Windows Update app. Windows Update is run by a svchost process.

I had the same problem. For me it was a problem with windows updates check reading datastore.edb

Then note RAM usage by datastore.edb during an update check after fixing:

Perhaps because of changes on the Windows Update servers.

I did check AFAIR and it wasn't there. When it happens again, I'll check that edbstore thing.

I did fix it but it's not easy. Also it took many attempts over several weeks!

For now open an Elevated Command Prompt

[EDIT: Type powershell and hit enter then paste the following]

get-hotfix -id kb3083325,kb3083324,kb2976978,kb3075853,kb3065987,kb3050265,kb3075851,kb2902907,kb3068708,kb3022345,kb2952664,kb2990214,kb3035583,kb971033,kb3021917,kb3044374,kb3075249,kb3080149

Enable Quick Edit Mode - see link below. To paste, highlight the code above and paste into command prompt window via right click.

It means that it will check and display which of those are installed. It will not install anything. I've had the issue several times over the last 6 to 12 months. Currently it has not returned.

Check Windows Update settings are set to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download or install them" and uncheck "Give me recommended updates the same way I recieve important updates"

Uninstall KB2990214

Open an Elevated Command Prompt then type

Powershell

Press Enter and wait for the prompt then type

wusa /uninstall /kb:2990214 /quiet /norestart

​

Reboot once the update has been removed.

Run Disk Cleanup like this:

It is an update for Windows Update Client. You don't need them both. Use IE to visit this link:

Note: Suggest keeping kb3075851 for now.
