ThrashZone. I love my daughter in law dearly but some people should not be allowed to touch a computer and she is one of them. Not everybody is gifted with the ability to adapt to changes in technology as we are.

Thank you UsernameIssues. Is that the same Disable_Get_Windows_10.reg file as the one under Option Three in Brinks tutorial found here? If so, mission accomplished.

As far as I know, the reg file offered in that tutorial only turns off the notification in the task bar. The other settings that I suggested claim to tell Windows Update to not allow a W10 upgrqde - even if the user asks for it somehow.

This one has that bottom one you listed above,

Correct me if I am wrong, but in reference to the following syntax:


[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade] "AllowOSUpgrade"=dword:00000000
"ReservationsAllowed"=dword:00000000


The "0" value means to enable which would allow the upgrade and reservation, right, as shown under Note: of Option One here.

So, if I want to disable the ability to allow the OS Upgrade and not allow the reservation I would have to change those values to dword:00000001 wouldn't I?

Think of it as:
0 means no
1 means yes
AllowOSUpgrade = 0 = no = no OS Upgrade Allowed
ReservationsAllowed = 0 = no = Reservations not allowed

DisableGWX = 1 = yes = yes, disable get windows 10
DisableOSUpgrade = 1 = yes = yes, disable OS upgrade

Yes that's the one I was referring to, I was mainly posting it for others to use as an easy link.

Technically, 0 = false and 1 = true

For the English in these settings, yes/no might be easier to deal with than enable/disable.
DisableOSUpgrade = 1 = yes = yes, disable OS upgrade
DisableOSUpgrade = 1 = enable = enable the option to disable OS upgrade

Ah! There we go! Now that makes sense to me. I do recall discussing true and false in reg class with my instructor, but not enable/disable or yes/no.

I think it's interesting that as recently as Aug 28 Microsoft support has been giving out instructions on how to disable GWX. In a quick search I didn't find specific Win7 instructions, but I did find a Win8.1 posting that would just as easily work for Win7:

Besides preventing installation of KB3035583, it contains the following suggestion:

In addition to that, navigate to the following location and delete GWX folder.
Delete the folder GWX in C:\Windows\System32\
​

Pretty cool instructions coming from an official MS web site. I suspect this is the difference between a support team actually wanting to help customers and a bureaucratic team trying to push the wonderful future down users' throats.

BTW, I have (not surprisingly) found that systems that had installed an old version of KB3035583 but blocked newer ones have different symptoms than some of the reports in this thread. For instance, some old versions allow Windows Update to work normally; the most recent version shows only the Win 10 upgrade, regardless of how many uninstalled Win7 fixes are available.

Apparently Windows Update treats a reissue of KB3035583 as completely new. I knew it was unhidden if you haven't applied it, but I didn't realize it would be reinstalled even if you had previously installed it. Bummer.

Nope. Not at the moment. I did a system restore to back off the fix and I don't feel like going through that exercise again right now. Someone did post a screenshot in some other thread. (There are several on this topic.) That's how I knew I wasn't the only on running into this. If I find that other thread, I'll post a link to it.

BTW, There may have been a way to get to the regular maintenance list from the Get Win10 panel, but I wasn't about to click anything there.
