Microsoft imposes deadline for OEMs to sell Windows 7 and 8.1 PCs

Customers who own a Windows 7 or 8 PC, in need of a replacement PC, and aren’t ready to get familiar with Windows 10, have a deadline to buy a new PC running their familiar version of Windows. Microsoft has confirmed on its Windows Lifecycle Fact Sheet web page that PC manufacturers have until October 31 of next year to sell off all their stocks of computers running Windows 7 Professional or Windows 8.1.

Over 70% of the people i know are done with Windows as well , are running Linux and some are buying Mac's.

What is interesting is that W8/8.1 is on a similar time-scale. That's a real admission of failure. W7 would have to be about that time given the end of support date.

I still run across a few software sites carrying 7 editions but not in English likely off the track places in Eastern Europe or other developing countries that are behind the times on things. You would think Ultimate would be seeing the same time frame or longer then Pro being the crown edition while Pro and Enterprise see far more corporate application.

Presently most retail outlets will either be seeing 8.1 or 10 on the shelves unless dealing with a wholesale warehouse with some leftover inventory to still be seeing anything with 7 on it they weren't able to clear out over the last few years. You then have to wonder how Dell can still provide the choice of OS when only Pro can be still be put on?

Vista support won't end until early 2017 showing MS has to extend things due to flops like 8! 10 on the other hand is what should have been the next version as it shows progression as well as the return of the new look with tiles type Start menu. 10 itself is a working OS as I had suspected it would be typically taking a few versions for MS to get things right! :roflmao:

I ran one of the early bird Tech Preview builds at the start of the year which I finally dumped the VM for and have seen some interesting things for sure! Upgrades love to come out "Buggy" while clean installs seem to be quite the way 7 was at first still needing a few things but not any major obstacle. The 10 installer is the quirky part for the most part however requiring that you unplug all other drives other then the drive you plan for either the upgrade or clean install to!

The initial first physical install of 10 here was an upgrade over a temp fresh install of 7 on the second OS drive where you couldn't even get the upgrade to go on until finding that the two old storage drives were the ones seeing boot files and temp installation folders! OUCH! Due to the need to restore an image made in June I found the 10 app and "found000" folder until getting that cleaned! Before the failed attempt on the host drive at the time I ran into that failed attempt to upgrade which kept seeing the same failure screen when going to check for updates!

First you see the Reserved copy is finally ready on Sept 1st.

And then as the upgrade seems to be going well....

That one actually came up long before the click on the 10 app was showing the download was ready while the same screen was what kept coming even after the option to upgrade was disabled. The advice for anyone contemplating an upgrade to 10 is to first see a full system image backup made ahead of time!

Granted! The Ultimate edition was primarily the home user edition that saw all the goods added in. The Pro however is the generally wide accepted for office machines replacing Vista Business and XP Pro following 2000 Pro in the progressive line.

Here I've been able to do a lot with Ultimate that would never have been seen with Home Premium as well as having a couple of other items the Pro edition didn't see included while it was possible to see them added in. 7 still has been a great OS regardless of which edition to work with having all three here. The 32bit Home Premium laptop no longer sees 7 however now seeing the 64bit flavor of the 10 Home edition there.

Seems to indicate that no one should ever buy the top of the range version of Windows (remember the Vista Ultimate fiasco).

Nothing wrong with owning 7 Ultimate when you got it for $15 a pop and answering a quiz correctly. Also got some copies with Technet. For me the upgrade to 10 Pro for free is NOT worth it. I lose far too much and gain a bunch of crap I don't want or need. I to am exploring Linux Mint Mate. I'll never buy a mac (except a coat) as crapples walled garden is even worse than M$. I don't know what crazy Microsoft is going to do next. The seem to be intent on alienating their users.....to Linux, Google or Amazon & Dropbox and phone and tablet users will have to now pay for online storage they were promised when the device was purchased would be free and then low cost. Anyone out there at college studying business management should learn from Microsoft this is not how you treat you clients. They go elsewhere. Frankly I was a Microsoft Fan and used to recommend their products and talked a bunch of people off of Vista onto 7 and so on. No more. Those same people have been told to stick with 7 and then in 2020 see what is going on and to seriously consider Linux. We just need a powerful OEM to get Linux on their machines and job will be done. Meanwhile MS Titanic full steam towards disaster and worthless stock......

Sure that will happen when W-10 is worth buying.

Do I, Layback Bear think a proper W-10 will happen soon.
NO.
That is why I have a brand new Windows 7/64 Pro Microsoft DVD still packaged in my desk waiting for my next build.
No deals of any kind just pay $140.00 and let it sit until I need it.

Folks the only way I know to win this battle with W-10 and Microsoft is just don't buy W-10 as it is. They either fix W-10 or they get no money from us.

Many of you folks remember like I do how easy it was to move from XP to Windows 7.
No dancing in mud puddles chanting, games played, lies, spying,ect.

It was simple to me.
Did my homework.
Bought Windows 7 DVD and installed Windows 7/64.
First couple of weeks was a little strange.
I found this forum and away I went enjoying Windows 7.
The good old days.
I wish Microsoft could just go back to honest, straight forward business again.

The Enterprise people have some serious choices to make.
They surly don't want a Enterprise operating system that has to be conjungulated all the time. They need something SOLID and RELIABLE that they can use and trust for years on their thousands of computers.
It's to costly to being playing games with Microsoft for Enterprise customers.

I never any 7 deal for only $15 anywhere and ended up buying the Ultimate retail package through Staples immediately following the Oct. 2009 launch date shelling the $319.99 tab out for that being $100 more then what was asked for the Pro edition picked up later on a discount for the second machine as well as other 7 media including the Home Premium for seeing a new case for a family member.

Money? The upgrade is free. And, who are these "us" you mention? Which battle there is to win? Do you mean that because Microsoft has released this most amazing, flexible OS ever made, the consumers should rebel and tell "We don't like change! We don't like getting the new Windows for free!"?

Yes, it was easy. If you didn't mind losing your installed software you just backed up first your personal data, then installed Windows 7, reinstalled your software and finally restored your data. Or the easiness of an in-place upgrade, keeping your software: Get Vista first from somewhere and upgrade to it, then repeat the procedure and upgrade to Seven (as you remember, direct upgrade XP to Seven was not possible).

And now we have to do this in such a difficult way, upgrade directly from Seven to 10 keeping everything, software, data and settings.

You are right. What on earth did MS think making the upgrade so difficult? Do it with one click from the Seven desktop, so difficult, I truly miss the easy way as in XP to Seven upgrade. And how stupid of MS it is to even offer an alternative fro those who for any reason want to upgrade using ISO instead, just go and get the ISO and upgrade.

Let's unite! Let's say all together "Microsoft, we hate change, we don't like anything new! We don't want an amazing, truly excellent OS you have now released and are giving it free to us. Please bring XP back, we are willing to pay big bucks for it".

Gee alll that talk about upgrades! Just now the 10 10240 build upgraded to the 10565 build was again upgraded to the 10576 latest build and "Everything" that was installed on the 10240 most people will of course be upgrading to was found intact on the 10576!



For XP to 7 on the other hand the need for a clean install was obvious being two versions newer with the backward compatibility on the 32bit not so on the 64bit 7 for XP games and apps you couldn't get to run on the 32bit Vista! Fat was removed from Vista but returned with 7 as well as seeing the new MinWin kernel progressed on further with 10. 10 also sees the return of the updated Start menu featuring not only a change in how things work like a right click menu on the Start button but the AllApps instead of All Programs, Settings is an entirely new screen that will eventually do away with the Control Panel.

Besides the appearance another thing besides MS adding in the "Windows Feedback" option for people to submit anything including any bugs they encounter so MS can make 10 the "Best OS ever" as they have been promoting 10 the fact that most 7 games and even a few 98SE Legacy to XP stuff runs on the 64bit 10 shows another drastic change will be seen from now on.

A friend was griping: "Why can't we simply upgrade from 98SE to each new version and still keep the same things?" not have to keep buying new softwares or updating existing ones, etc.You may just be seeing the beginning of the OS that upgrades itself by way of updates rather then continue with the all too well known compatibility between versions problems!

We apparently read the statistics in very different way. The category "Other" on that very page you linked to shows market share 0.67% on September 15th, and 0.45% on October 15th, a drop by 33%.
