As soon as I log on, for the first 40 seconds, as the icons are loading the laptop is fine.
A minute in the destop freezes, I can't do anything and the only thing that moves is the mouse.

I've tried safemode and it works fine on safemode.

Last night I turned off my Laptop manually before a windows update could complete itself - could it be a reprecussion of this? If so, how do I go about fixing it?

I've tried system restores to no avail, and I'm not sure as to what to do next!

Please help!

Hello and welcome DS no mate the update would or should represent itself next time you power on so it is almost positive it is something else.

Now get into safe mode and run these for starters
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2

Hello, I've found the root of the problem.

I disabled Kaspersky Pure 3.0 from auto-running upon start-up, this has stopped the freezing.
However, any time that I try to open Kaspersky, the computer slows down eventually forcing me to manually switch off the laptop and restart.

Should I uninstall and reinstall kaspersky? I think it was the windows update which has adversely effected Kaspersky?

Ok thats good it is half fixed as it were. Now if you look at this tutorial (all of it is good to get the best out of your machine) http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/11728-optimize-windows-7-a.html and go to point 9 that is a good place to start anyway I find you can pick the start up programs.

Now I see you run PURE and as with most Kaspersky software it is rather slow at loading - I have run Kaspersky ISS for five years now and always leave it unticked in msconfig (in tutorial) You could uninstall and reinstall it but it is tedious though and may not fix the issue.
What I do is to keep a download of Kaspersky in Downloads so when I reinstall for any reason it becomes much quicker to install but the choice is yours of course.

If I may ask is PURE really what you need if not why not try the straight net security and what I do each time the next version comes through I download and install it after uninstalling the current version and use the same code to activate it.
