hi guys,

I have win 7 set to "check for updates but let me choose whether to download...."... it used to work fine, so when there's an update, I'd get the icon in the taskbar.

since some time I noticed that it's not showing that anymore. if I load windows update, then I can see that there's something, usually a windows defender update. this happens on 2 win7 machine, my personal and work pc, same settings.

under what to update I have

recommended updates UNCHECKED
Microsoft update CHECK
software notification CHECK

I tried just now to restart the service under services.msc...but didn't show.. any ideas why?

thanks,
Gabrio

I have the same issue. the problem started when MSpy tried to sneak in telemetry updates and I thwarted them. I just put a shortcut in my Quick Launch menu on my taskbar for the Windows Updates to make checking it easier and just check it every few days.

that's interesting, infact I haven't accepted SOME of the most recent update packs, as well as the win10 update notification thing, as I am not interested to upgrade.....that would be the culprit then?

one thing tho, I think it does notify me about the monthly security updates, say now there's a defender update and it's not giving me the icon in the taskbar... fishy.

thanks,
Gab

Hi,
I've been testing two W7 Pro x86 configurations for update notifications and for me the answer is this; as proven today (patch 'wednesday' uk).

hi

it seems not to be working unfortunately, i have enabled that yesterday (then did a bunch of updates), today a new "Important Update" was detected around an hour and a half ago (i just checked now manually for curiosity) and no notice in the taskbar/action center - does it take longer for the notification to appear? shouldnt that pop up as soon as a new update is detected?

also, i have just restarted because that update was detected this morning AFTER i started the pc, in the hope that he would see it now, but nothing, nada.

any clues? or maybe is really the fact that i blocked a bunch of other updates in the past months such as the win10 notifier and the sneaky telemetry update. nasty.

thanks,
Gab

click the little up arrow ^ lower right system tray. check to see if you have icon for update. check to see status
Only show notifications
Show icon and notifications
Hide icons and notifications

Win7 is notorious for adding entries with no icon, you can make above choices on new or added icon to show icon in system tray. If you want to reset notification area icons, try attachment. Notification icons will reappear when program is opened and/or running.

Hopes this helps! ;)

In searchbox type Notification Area Icons

Click on it when it appears.

If windows has created a 2nd or entry (without Icon) in the Notification Area Icons, it defaults to that entry and it won't appear in your system tray.

interesting, on my machine 1 I went there and near Windows Update it was written "Only show notifications" - no icon, I have changed that to Show Icon and Notifications... is that it?

then clicked again "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar" as I had before..

is that what you mean? thanks

I have had this issue on both my Win 7 machines running Home Premium for several months. In addition to here I see others reporting the issue so MS definitely did something with an update that, in my case, on both machines completely removed the Windows Update from the Notification Area. I ran the Notification Area reset when I first noticed it and I "think" the icon returned when the program was running but it again disappeared at some point, its not at all present in Notification Area.

I can't do the procedure Rich O suggests since I don't have Pro. Its clear MS broke something as there is no way the icon would randomly disappear completely on two different machines. I guess I have to manually check for updates or hope another monthly Update Client update, which probably messed it up, fixes it.

Hi bru, the procedure is not Pro specific. I have a Home Premium os running right now as I type.
Tell me: Do you have the "Flag Icon" showing on the right hand side of your task bar?

I see, I have to select "Change Action Center settings" to see "Turn messages on or off". Windows Update is ticked on both computers. No messages, no icon. Something broke the functionality.

Hi:

Can't find the link to the source at the moment, but I'm pretty sure that if you have disabled/uninstalled/hidden some/all of the fairly recent Win7 telemetry features, you will no longer see the usual Windows Update icon in the system tray, regardless of your Windows Update settings.
Someone here created a desktop shortcut to the Windows Update applet on his system as a workaround (still looking for that link, too).

HTH,
MM
