Hard drive not appearing in BIOS after PC upgrade

Hi everyone,

I know there are a lot of threads about this already but I read a lot and none have helped me. I just did a complete upgrade of my PC replacing motherboard, video card, processor and power supply but keeping original hard drives. My boot drive and external survived but for some reason, even though it was handled with great care, my other SATA hard drive doesn't appear anywhere anymore. I can hear it spin when I boot the PC but it doesn't appear in BIOS or in Disk Management. I changed the cable and the port it was plugged into but no dice.

IF it is indeed dead...what are my options in recovering the files?

When you replaced all that hardware you should of done a Clean Install of Window 7.
That way all the needed drivers would of match your new hardware.

In my opinion any time one replaces the motherboard the new drivers and chips set form the motherboard DVD should be used along with a fresh install of Windows and it's needed updates. Then check Device Manager for any extra need driver updates.

Your new video card may also need a new fresh driver once you system is up and running.

That's exactly what I did...I wasn't aware it's even possible to try and run an old installation off of entirely new hardware. This is a fresh install. Everything is up to date

When I read this I didn't get the impression it was a Clean Install.

Did you use the C/D that came with your mother board and load the needed chip set and USB drivers ect.

Could you give us the exact hard drive you are having problems with?

Try hooking the problem drive to the same sata port the working drive uses with the same working drive cables. That should isolate things.

Make sure your bios are set to default.

I know little of Gigabytes motherboard bios but make sure your not using Raid.
You should be using AHCI.

Your motherboard specs.

Storage InterfaceChipset:

1. 6 x SATA 6Gb/s connectors
2. Support for RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, and RAID 10

USBChipset:

1. 6 x USB 3.0/2.0 ports (4 ports on the back panel, 2 ports available through the internal USB header)
2. 6 x USB 2.0/1.1 ports (2 ports on the back panel, 4 ports available through the internal USB headers)

Windows version doesn't matter, yet; I'm asking about BIOS
