The Gwx tool should still work regardless of what updates are installed.

The settings mentioned in the tutorials require a version of the Windows Update Client that reads those settings. It has been a while since I looked at the reg changes that the GWX tool makes. You might be right about it always working.

Thrashzone, Are you saying 3102810 keeps coming back? After, I did a clean install with windows 7 and hide the recommended update including 3102810, it has not comeback yet. I am wondering since this update 971033 won't install without removing another update that blocks the install that maybe preventing 3102810 from being re-offered. I am unable to confirm that. There is an old post of mine, in the VIP section on how I got 971033 to install at one time. I just been so busy with health issues, I haven't got around to doing the fix again. Plus having to reinstall windows 7 again the other day thanks to dell.


Here is how I got KB971033 installed previously. I figured out why it wouldn't install. It was thanks to Noel postings that helped me to figure out the issue. The issue was that KB3004394 was installed. After removing that and rebooting. I restored the KB971033 and it installed. I downloaded the KB3004394 manually and tried to install it, it said not needed for this system or something like that. Now, I will probably do this again but wait tell I am ready to do another backup.

Yep just manually searching for updates it will install without ever being listed,
Uninstall it and this is what I get and manually searching is the only way to get rid of this

I'm pretty sure it was not listed on the 14th when it shows installed on the previous screen shot too I only installed Important updates and there it is

One or more of the last lot of Patch Tuesday updates for W7 must be related to W10.

I was looking at my OS partition and I noticed a C:\$Windows.~BT folder that had been created last week.
Inside was a Sources folder.
Luckily it only contained some sort of log file.

Well I just rolled back my system to 21st October's backup due to another issue with Windows Updates.

That means that Nov 2015 updates were downloaded and installed today.

Here's a list of updates. Note: I do not have MS Office installed. I did not get the C:\$Windows.~BT folder created after installing updates.

Here's the optional updates that I did not install. "Give me recommended updates the same way as I receive important updates" - if checked - might result in these being installed. One or more of those looks like the likely culprit.

Except that peronally I'd run an Elevated Command Prompt then type:

Powershell

Press Enter

Copy and paste the following:

get-hotfix -id KB2876229,KB2923545,KB2970228,KB3035583,KB2990214,KB3021917,KB3068708,KB2592687,KB2660075,KB2506928,KB2952664,KB3050265,KB2726535,KB2994023,KB3022345,KB3068708,KB3065987

Then press enter. See if any of those are found. Also I reckon that it is possible that Windows Updates check for files in Software Distribution Download folder or WINSXS and installs them if found. I'm not 100% sure on that one but it is one reason why I run advanced disk cleanup (include WU cleanup) after removing updates.

KB3102810 information posted on above link states it updates windows update components yet again so Windows 10 downloading and installation is the ultimate aim of this update.

Weird

I uninstalled KB3102810 yesterday and then I ran Windows Update so that I could "Hide" it.

Windows Update listed a Security Patch (KB2758694) that was released in January 2013!
It must be related to KB3102810, because I'd install an anti-RCE patch and it hasn't been sitting in my Update list for ~3 years.

I reinstalled KB2758694 and then I ran Windows Update Cleanup.

Yep this one pops up on my clean install

I was forced to reimage my PC due to the carnage KB3102810 caused when I uninstalled it (I lost my "Hidden Updates" list and "Programs and Features" was totally screwed up too).

Not sure it is some thing I would not normally install because it's out of my usage
I would never drag a file into outlook.com or office 2007 outlook so this update I would of skipped so no telling which this update addresses it just says outlook

While in the middle of a senior moment day before yesterday I did my latest Windows Updates. Not a good idea.

Long story in short form. KB3102810 got in and I uninstalled it earlier today after catching up on the current status. I didn't have any problems with removing it but did notice that I had a strange result. For what it's worth.

Earlier this month I followed these instructions offered by Brds7t7:

You can configure this Group Policy object by using Group Policy Editor (gpedit.msc). You can do this by going to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update, double-clicking "Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update", and then clicking Enabled

Or to suppress this offer through the registry, set the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
DWORD: DisableOSUpgrade = 1

After removing the update I no longer have the option "Turn off the upgrade to the latest version of Windows through Windows Update" in the Group Policy. However in checking the registry "DisableOSUpGrade" is set to 1. Then again I may still be in my "senior moment" status.

I got into the hiding of W10 prep. updates after a few had been installed, but when I uninstalled them (KB3102810 included), I lost all of the update history. Didn't lose any listing of the installed updates, just the history listing. I've not had any other repercussions from that activity. Different versions of KB3102810 must have had different effects on the various systems it "infected". This whole W10 update process has been so terribly crafted and executed, it will be a very long time before I go that route.
