Should I install recommended updates that I don't need?

Is it necessary to install recommended updates that don't apply to me? They must be called "recommended updates" for a reason. But barely any of the issues they fix occur for me.

Also, there is one recommended update that I'm not sure if I need of not. This update appears to be for USB Type-C billboard support but what is a billboard in this case? I may get a phone with a USB Type-C port in the future but that doesn't mean the computer itself has a Type-C port, so do I need it?

Id say NO, some of them relate to W10 upgrades.
You can allways check them via the more details option on the same screen.

I've installed all recommended updates, with the exception of 6 which relate to Windows 10 and the new telemetry updates, I certainly don't feel these necessary as I have no intention of installing Windows 10.
But I wouldn't say the recommended updates are necessary unless they're fixing a specific problem you're having. I just like to keep my exclude list small.

The only updates I would deem necessary are the security updates, I never skip those.

Well, I checked the recommended updates individually and none of them are necessary for me. (Except for maybe the USB Type-C update) I guess I don't have to install any of them unless I have the issues, right? Do any important updates require other recommended updates?

Yeah, I'd just leave those out. Like I said, I only install them to keep my exclude list to a minimum but most of them I could probably skip.
I don't think important updates rely on recommended updates, I think it's likely some recommended updates rely on certain important ones being installed though.
As long as you keep your important/Security updates up to date, it should all be fine.

Computer0304, just wondering which update are you referring to?
My board doesn't have any USB Type-C connectors so I don't receive any updates that relate to it.
Sounds like some kind of compatibility update.

I had a look at that update, only windows 8 is mentioned for that update, no windows 7 anywhere.
I presume you are using windows 7 ?

Hi Thelma, I think that's Microsoft just being lazy lately. I've noticed a few updates lately that have said only for Windows 8 but they get offered to Windows 7 PC's too. They just haven't updated the articles to reflect that.

Unless you're using a Kingston thumb drive it's probably not needed. No idea what the billboard refers to though.

On this computer, I'm actually using Windows 8.1. I do use a Kingston flash drive, but it says it's for HP ProBooks so it won't fix anything for me.
