Solved BSOD when connecting SD card from trail cam

Hi W7 forum people,

Here is my story,
I was connecting my sd card from new trail camera and the disk would now connect or at least the explorer would not recognize it. I use a Lexar card reader. I tried to restart computer but it just got stuck with the timer wheel circling. The computer would not shut down after several minutes so I decided to hold the power button down.

When it restarted I got the BSOD, but didn't catch the code, only that it was shutting off to prevent damage to computer components. I trying a couples times to restart but there was no bios or anything, just a blank screen at this point. I didn't know if the whole computer failed or what. I put this computer together with the support of a friend. I decided to use my startup repair software, I did a restore. Everything checked out successful and all error codes shown were 0x0. I shut down computer again to connect the remaining devices.

I would like to know what to do now since I checked and ran Startup Repair software? Is there some log file to check to see why I got the BSOD. If so, where might it be located? I also use or installed XP mode, not sure if that matters.

Thank you for your help.
Regards Mark H. U.

You can probably find it in the Event Viewer. (What information appears in event logs.)
At Windows 7 start menu type in event viewer and execute. Or like it says in link above.

Hello Baddog22556,
Thanks for pointing me to the EV.
The windows system logs show several warnings on Dec 24 related to wpad.gateway.mts.net timed out, NtpClient was unable to set a manual peer to use as a time source because of DNS resolution error.

On the 26th there were a few errors such as Service Control Manager 7023 None "The Intel(R) HD Graphics Control Panel Service service terminated with the following error: %%-2147467259" & The Garmin Core Update Service service failed to start due to the following error: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion."

And one Critical Microsoft-Windows-Kernel-Power 41 (63) The system has rebooted without cleanly shutting down first. This error could be caused if the system stopped responding, crashed, or lost power unexpectedly.
Probably me shutting down.

I dont see anything that is really bad but I dont have any experience here.

What do you think?

regards Mark H. U.

The last BSOD was 4 months back, you're sure you had a BSOD?

BSOD error

Hi ,
Well what I got was blue screen with text on and the computer said some thing about shutting down as to not damage components or something like that.
I was unable to make note of it and then it was gone.

If you said maybe it wasn't , thats ok too as I have no experience in this area.
What file did you find your info in?

regards Mark

Hi,
I set up as you suggested and set the area under "Write debugging info" to Small memory dump.
Is that ok? as the link had a number of selections.

Also, would it also be a good idea to set up Elevated Command Prompt Shortcut?

regards Mark.

I only wanted you to uncheck the 'Automatically restart' option, the rest is with the tutorial.
Is that option unchecked?

For what would you want to create an command prompt shortcut?

Hi Axe0,
Yes I unchecked the 'Automatically restart' option.

I thought I could get the errors relisted on the prompt screen.

I was connecting my sd card from new trail camera and the disk would now connect or at least the explorer would not recognize it.
What size of memory card is it? How is it formatted (FAT, FAT32, NTFS, exFAT, ?).

I recently learned that Windows doesn't do well with FAT32 devices that are >32GB, so if your trailcam's card was formatted some other way than in a PC that might cause a problem.

I don't think that is possible.

Try to reproduce the crash, take a picture of it and post the picture. You now should have time enough :)

Hi Max7
I'm not sure how the card is formatted, used it right out of the box.
Its a 4 GB sd card, the funny thing is I can see the photos and video using my wife's laptop that is win7 home and 64bits.

I have use my sd cards from my nikon camera and it works fine, just now the one from Moultrie. I may have to contact them too.
Thanks,
Mark

Hmmm the card works in the laptop? Have you tried it in your Nikon? And the Nikon's cards read fine in the Lexar but not the Moultrie? I'd check the file formats against each other for grins, but maybe the Moultrie card just needs to be reformatted (FAT32 is what I would use).

I didn't try it in my nikon because the manufacturer said it could lock up the card.

I'll send email to moultrie now and let U know what they say.
Thanks.

Update 2015 Dec 30 3:15pm
I phoned moultrie and they were not very helpful. They said that win7 pro is not compatible with there memory card.

Sorry but IMO this makes no sense. I have trailcams (tho not Moultrie) and AFAIK there is no "mystery format" that any of them use.

Hi,
I agree with you, I'm trying to repeat the process but with no luck.
It looks like my card reader doesn't recognize that card for what ever reason. Windows doesn't bring up the box to ask if you want to see in Win Explorer.
I'll check to see if a newer driver would help.

Update,

I found out part of the problem, card reader only supports up to 2GB cards and doesn't work on Windows 7 or newer operating systems. I have to get a new reader. Most my other cards are all 1 GB.

Never heard of that before--but I believe it! Seems likely to be your problem; thanks for posting. I have an old reader or two that I will have to check (and discard if necessary)!

Hi All,

So far I have not had the same problem again and can't seem to replicate it either.
I'm going to mark as solved and would like to thank all who had input to my problem.
Keep up the good work on this site!
