After I shutdown or reboot, when the system restarts, I see an Explorer window open up. The Explorer window is always open to the folder "C:\Windows\system". The folder is empty BTW.

I've tried some of the solutions in this webpage, but none of them seemed to have worked.

Hi,
Use Clean boot,
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...ation-conflicts-performing-clean-startup.html
Click Start and type in the search box,
msconfig
Click on the suggestion on top or hit the Enter key,
Go to the Startup section and take some screen shots for a complete list,
Go to the Services section and on the bottom left Check the box to Hide All Microsoft services,
Repeat the screen shots,
See the links above my signature on how to take and upload screen shots here,
Cheers.

Okay, thanks, after following this instruction, I narrowed the problem down to a startup program called ShellFolderFix, which is a program that I found out about through this folder actually (ShellFolderFix - Manage folder window positions/size - Windows 7 Help Forums). It's a program that's supposed to remember your individual folder sizes/positions, and views, sort of like how it used to be under Windows XP. I'll now try to troubleshoot that program, or uninstall it completely.

Update:
So I uninstalled the program, and reinstalled it, and it fixed the issue of the empty folder just coming up during startup. However, now I have two entries for the same thing MsConfig, one of them is from the newly reinstalled program, and the other is from the old installationg of the program. The old installation shows it as unchecked and disabled, but I'd like to know how to remove the old program's startup entry?

Hi,
Not sure I clicked the link and got a mbam popup of a malicious website so I believe you just downloaded malware :/

Review Jacee’s instructions to run Adwcleaner here post #7,
Ignore the title of the thread,
http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/316404-instant-savings-app.html
On the BleepingComputer site use the button that looks like this,
adwcleaner-button.JPG

You can use these free tools to see if they find anything,
Manually Update them before running full scans,
Try not to use your computer while the scans are running, (one at a time of course).
See this tutorial on how to download and run Malwarebytes,
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/338716-malwarebytes-anti-malware-free.html
Also use the Custom scan option not the Threat scan,

Please Do Not clean/ Delete or Remove Any detections before posting the scan results first before review especially Malwarebytes,
Malwarebytes | Free Anti-Malware Detection & Removal Software
SAS is safe to remove anything it finds ;)
SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
