January 12th 2016 Security Update Release Summary

Today we released security updates to provide additional protections against malicious attackers. As a best practice, we encourage customers to apply security updates as soon as they are released.

System checked for updates at 12:38 A this morning. The result was a yellow warning display to "Check For Updates". WU is set for "Check for updates, but let me choose to download and install". Never had this warning message before. At 8:45 P, I started WU checking for updates. It finished at 8:53 P with 11 important and 2 optional updates. One of the optionals is KB2952664 (reissue?). I haven't had time to review the 11 important ones yet.

I have not manually checked
One update I hid last round was kb3112343 and was classified as Important
It was mostly about monitoring win-10 upgrades than anything so that's why I hid it
I figured that is why the message is there now to check for updates :/

9 security updates installed for me (after making a mandatory Macrium image, of course).

I didn't bother with the malicious software removal tool (I never do).

Checked my Windows Update settings (Check for updates but let me choose...) and GWX Control Panel afterwards to make sure nothing has changed.

Oh, and KB2952664 appeared AGAIN (Optional). And it's been hidden AGAIN. How many times is that now? 9? 10? I've lost count. I wish MS would give it a rest.

Funny thing is, I have Windows 10 Home which I run from time to time on a separate SSD inside this computer but that doesn't seem to deter them, does it?

Yep the system finally showed them I didn't do anything really just unhid our friend kb3112343
Then it said never checked for updates error

I just shut down for a little while and restarted
Waited about an hour then looked at it again and badaboom 18 Important including our friend
I'm in no hurry.
Remote code execution yada.....

KB3121212 (Kernel Update) failed on me 6 or more times; thru WU & standalone downloads from MS Catalog & WU Catalog... all failed. ran the WU troubleshooter, sfc /scannow reported corrupt but un-fixable errors...SURT reported no problems... tried to install DISM / Online with MSU extracted to .CAB: Error 87.

Finally bit the bullet and did a repair install and all is well now.

KB2952664 came back again. I really don't know how they snuck it in but they did.
I watch for it and to all checking it still got in.
Had to remove and hide again.
All my updates are done manually so it must be hiding within some other update.

Another revision of that update, it's on Version 16 now so expect to see it reappearing again in the future.

I don't bother hiding some updates and that is one of them

I strongly recommend that you don't install kernel updates for at least a few days after they are first offered. They are the specific type of update most prone to breaking a computer and it's best to wait until the dust has settled so that if there's a problem it can be withdrawn or replaced before you risk getting that problem.

I had 14, these 12, Skype with 1 MSE; Hid the Skype and the highlighted 2952664.



Ran the IE11 by itself, the other 11 as a group. No problems to report.

Had 17 important, which included security updates for Office 2007 and 2 optional including KB2952664 and the Windows Live Mail 2012 update.

All the security updates installed without issue and I hid both the optional updates.

That update is from August Thrash, have you only just received it?
Can't say I've ever touched the problem steps recorder anyway and the update it's recommending to install is one on my hidden list.

Yea it just popped up on my acer rig weird but that's the new and improved update system
Not sure I like that one messing with local flash drives.

You are correct... I will definitely wait a day or two + make a full backup before initiating any future Kernel related Updates, lesson learned... although I did have a backup from Jan 8th available to deploy.

When I launched Windows Update, I immediately got an error message (can't remember the code). Internet research led me to find out that BITS (Background Intelligent Transfer Service) was set to Disabled instead of Manual. Very strange.

I wanted to add several other odd things that have been happening lately with windows update, and NO it is NOT malware or viruses. I can duplicate these on BOTH my PCs with Windows 7 SP1.


I noticed as have MANY others here on this forum that if you did a new install of Windows 7 that
when you went to search for updates the service would hang and do absolutely NOTHING at all, or
take many hours to complete, I personally noticed that one symptom would be that ONLY when attempting to search for updates that M$ servers would BLOCK my connection when downloading an update at 50%> I could duplicate this many times....

Also over the past two weeks I have noticed that unlike usual where upon immediately booting up and checking my windows update page (I would instantly see the updates listed) that were ready for downloading, now I see oddly it will claim No new updates for this computer, with the green shield, even though I know there are over 60 important updates. What happens now is that only after perhaps 3-4 minutes or more, Windows will eventually show me those updates...this is NOT what happened in the past..

Prolly pushing u to update to 10. I find updates since 10 came out go very slow downloading on all my computers and on my clients computers running 7.

Windows 10 is starting to be like that U2 album that was put on Iphones.

Sure, a lot of people like U2, but even some of their fans were annoyed Apple forced it down their throat.
