audiodg.exe freezes permanently when choosing any recording device

Hey everyone!

I've got a quite complex problem on my hands here so I'll try to go over everything I've already learned and tried doing.

The core of the problem is what it says in the title. Whenever I click on any peripheral USB recording device, audiodg freezes permanently. I'm therefore unable to go to device options, which is of crucial importance to me. I've reinstalled all possible drivers, be it USB drivers, Realtek sound ones or ones for those two devices - nothing helps with the matter. The devices themselves work with no problems and the "playback" window in audiodg creates no problems at all - I can browse it freely. Problems start when I go to the "recording" tab and click on any of the devices.

Both devices are USB based. One's a GENESIS HX66 gaming headset and the other's a Behringer Xenyx303USB interface, with a Shure mic hooked up.

I've ascertained that there is no driver conflict, and after posting the issue to cnet forums (audiodg.exe permanently freezes - Forums - CNET) I concluded that running ComboFix might in fact have been the cause of this problem. I learned that audiodg runs in a separate login session outside of the user-based one, and it was possible for ComboFix to mess with it. It's the most plausible explanation as of right now.

So I decided to do a repair-installation of Windows 7, which I thought would fix the issue. I ran into some problems - remembering that my DVD image has vanilla Win7 Ultimate, and I've already got SP1 installed, so there was a compatibility conflict.

I of course tried to uninstall SP1 to be able to do the repair-install, but I wasn't able to - after uninstalling it and restarting the computer, my next system boot led only to a black screen with the mouse cursor in the middle of it and nothing else - followed by an automatic reset. Then the startup system fixing tool popped up and the only viable option was to restore the system to a state from before the uninstallation of SP1, due to "incorrect system settings". So it looks like I'm stuck with SP1 for now and not quite able to do a repair-reinstall.

My questions are therefore:
1) Is there any other thing I can do to fix audiodg without resorting to a repair-reinstall?
2) What could cause the problems after the uninstallation of SP1? Would first removing all subsequent system updates before SP1 itself help?

What happens if you select "Stereo Mix" as the default recording device? If Stereo Mix is set then any active input device (don't set the active device as the recording device) will be heard or can be used to record (with the recording program set for Stereo Mix as the source).

Yeah, Stereo Mix works fine and is selectable.

The problem though isn't with the devices not working. They work alright, and recordings can be done. The problem is with me not being able to even click on those devices in audiodg. It just freezes and I need to exit it and open it again, so it's not possible to go to their properties window.

I don't need to do this in order to set a different default recording device, as I can choose which one I want to use from program level. I need to be able to go to the properties window of the microphone hooked into the interface - there's a trick I do there to make it produce no hiss when recording. That's basically all I need this for, and haven't so far found any substitute solution.

I use microphones, but its in my recording studio and I don't use the PC audio, I have specialized recording equipment.

This is not a hardware problem, this I already know. I need to find a way to either reinstall my system or somehow repair audiodg. Maybe restoring some registry entries could help?

Combofix would have created a log file, showing what it deleted.
Post it.. Combofix was designed to be used as an infection removal tool for malware experts, who would review the logs before taking further action.

To be fair - the problem started occurring pretty recently, so I guess it narrows down your search to the last time Combofix was used. I'm of course not 100% certain that it's the culprit, but seems like a good lead regardless.

Where can I check which chipset I have? Neither Speccy nor HWINFO gave me a model name, though I found out from Speccy that I'm indeed dealing with a C-media device. It says the Genesis headset uses a C-media chipset. But it's not the only device that produces the problem in audiodg, so I'm not sure which device should I apply this driver to.

Also, the website won't let me DL anything, it asks me for some kind of login and password.

While working on this problem, you should download a current Windows 7 ISO that includes SP1 so if necessary, you can do a Repair Install without having to uninstall SP1 (and all the updates on top of it, like 190 or so).

I'm really inclined to do that actually. The issue is relatively minor, but my system could probably use fixing that way. Thing is - I need a particular localized version of the system, it doesn't let an English version install on top of it. I've tried Thanks anyway

EDIT: Nvm, I think I actually found a suitable ISO. So my question now is: does a repair-reinstall tamper in any way with the contents of Program Files?

Yeah, that write-up was no help at all. I've tried many things already and spent over 10 hours trying to fix this, basic stuff like this won't be of much help.

I know, I am struggling with it for months now, have no sound, only with external speakers. I have read every article under the sun about this Audiodg.exe. I think my problem is more than one unfortunately, cannot help you I'm afraid.

A Repair install will leave "MOST" of your installed programs alone, but probably not all. I've read that sometimes Microsoft Office needs to be reinstalled. Also your anti-virus.

You're best bet is to do a full image backup to an external hard drive before the repair install. That way you can always get back to where you are now if serious problems occur.

Yep! A repair-reinstall of Windows 7 fixed this problem for me. I'm very glad.

Also, it looks like practically everything from my system from before the reinstall was preserved - I see no difference in functionality at all. The only downside is that the reinstall took easily like 5 hours or so.
