Microsoft shifts Windows 10 to ‘Recommended’ update.

Microsoft has been increasingly aggressive in its attempts to push consumers to download Windows 10. Starting today, the company is upping the ante once again. As of now, Windows 10 is now classified as a “Recommended” update, which means many Windows 7 and 8.1 users will download and begin the installation automatically.
By default, Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 shipped with updates enabled and a second box — “Give me Recommended updates the same way I receive important updates” checked as well. Plenty of users have changed these settings, but you can bet millions of people haven’t. We’ve written before about the power of defaults, and in this case, leaving automatic updates on has been a good idea for many users. The GWX application interface. Note the absence of any prominent “No” button.

Well hallelujah we are saved >_<

Oh, I hope the above image isn't considered offensive on this forum. If so, I apologize (I've done a search and found the 's' word used quite a few times in the past).

While I'm still here:

Microsoft has published a KB article detailing how end-users can control the upgrade prompts and disable them in the future
Really? Why should Windows 7/8 users have to go to all the trouble of researching something that shouldn't be necessary to start with?

As others have already pointed out (many times)... NO means NO! There should have been a one off prompt to upgrade and if we say NO, that should be the end of it.

By all means, MS can advertise Windows 10 as much as they like - even in Windows Update. But, people should not have to put up with the sort of tactics (which is almost like professional malware) that MS is using to try and get as many people onto W10 as possible.

my internet is pay as you go, on a dongle, so i have limited usage. i topped it up today, so what if i had not read that article and 7 downloaded win 10 and ate up all my usage in 1 go, or my data cap ran out x way into the download, would it keep trying to redownload when i top it up wondering why the hell my data usage ran out so quick? MY data usage, limited, that I pay for, would m/s pay me for that? i doubt it and good luck trying to get it off them.

Now thats funny , i really needed a good laugh this morning, thanks for that .

its easy, but only when you know how, and what has happened. many users do not have advanced pc knowledge.

Nah, you don't have to be very advanced. It is relatively easy to find.

Nah, you don't have to be very advanced. It is relatively easy to find.

With your computer club experience, you should know that the vast majority of computer users/owners will not know that, no matter how easy it is. Microsoft is capitalizing on that.

Maybe you are right. At the club I was amazed how few people (of a total 800) knew anything about computers. The club had degenerated to a social club where picnics were more important than learning something about computers or operating systems.

In fact some of those people complained that my classes were too complicated where I had really broken it down to the easiest pieces and made an extensive hand-out documentation - that of course nobody read. They were to lazy to crank up their grey matter - if there was any. Well, let those brainless hicks smother in their ignorance. For me that is neither here nor there.

A surprise install of W10 is not good for domain connected PCs either - MS announced that they are no longer exempt. If the users go ahead and click on 'I agree' when the W10 EULA pops up, then ask why the startup screen is no longer familiar, the office 'expert' is going to be bouncing off the walls. Workplace users are no more computer savvy than your club class. They use a few applications, but know little else.

Nobody can teach anybody anything if they are not willing to learn.
Many will say they are to old to learn. B/S.

Older brains work just fine if one keep them busy. Brains are muscles that need exercised.
In a few months I will be 70 and often learn things on this forum. All most daily.

It reminds me of a old joke. You might have to brick your students. That will make them such in the knowledge you are offering for free.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This guy named Kevin was going into the desert for a week and he needed a camel for the trip. Kevin never ventured into the desert, and he was advised by a friend to locate a reputable rent-a-camel franchise. Kevin tells the rent-a-camel man that he will be making a week-long trip through the desert. The rent-a-camel man says even his best camel can only go 4 days without water. After some discussion, the rent-a-camel man says "I don't like to suggest this, but you know a good camel can go an extra 3 days or more if he is bricked." Kevin agrees to take the best camel. As he leaves the rent-a-camel office, the rent-a-camel man reminds Kevin to brick the camel. Not wanting to display his ignorance, Kevin doesn't ask about the procedure for bricking the camel. Well Kevin knows that it is a long difficult trip for the camel and lets it eat ant drink its fill. He encourages the camel to take on all the water it can by offering it often. Sure enough 4 days into the trip the camel drops dead. Kevin barely makes it back to town alive and can't wait to confront the rent-a-camel man. "You rented me a shitty camel", Kevin says, "It dropped dead of heat exhaustion after only 4 days in the desert, and I almost died walking back." The puzzled rent-a-camel man looked up at Kevin and says, "He was my best camel. Did you brick him?" Mad as hell, Kevin replies, "Brick him, what the hell do you mean?" The rent-a-camel man explains that when the camel bends over to take water, you take two bricks and slam his gonads between them, and as the camel gasps with his head in the water bucket, he takes on another 3 to 4 day supply of water. "Damn", Kevin says," Doesn't that hurt?" The rent-a-camel man answers, "No! Just keep your thumbs out of the way when you slam the bricks together."
