Solved Unsubscribing from office 365

This is doing my head in.

I was a nominated user of my GF's Office 365 (5 seat) account. It recently expired, she has no intention of renewing it.

I decided to redeem my free Office 365 Personal licence (free when I purchased my new Lumia).

I can't check out the product because the system sees that I am currently subscribed via her account. I follow the link to My Account. there is a hyper link that offers to unsubscribe me from her account.

When I click on it a blank box pops up. Nothing happens.

I have tried various browsers and even tried Edge on my phone. Still nothing.

I contacted MS support and the agent logged into my PC. He was unable to do anything more than I had. I was then put through to Billing and Subscriptions. The agent there told me that it is impossible to unsubscribe without the primary account holder unsubscribing you. I told him about the hyperlink.

He didn't seem to believe that it existed. Eventually he told me to use a different Wifi network and try the link again. Then he suggested setting up a brand new MS account (yeah like I want to lose my phone back ups and purchase history).

I tried to contact billing again. The new agent told me that I don't have a subscription.... When I insisted that I am subscribed, she deferred to a colleague, I can only assume that it was the earlier fellow. Again I was told that it is impossible to unsubscribe without the other person booting you off their subscription.

I find it very hard to believe that you cannot unsubscribe on your own, and if you can't why is there a hyper link in the first place? Looking at the HTML source code, I can see that there are supposed to be various messages in the box, one of which confirms the unsubscription.

What happens if the primary account holder dies or disappears?

I have been trying to sort this out for the last 4.5 hours.

And yes, I can ask my GF to sort it out for me but that wont happen today, assuming that she can even remember her log in details.

I know of no such Office program.

Off the top of my head, it would have expired just under a month ago.

If I open Word (etc) it says that there is a problem with my subscription and a pop says that they need my help, clicking on the link takes me to the My Account page. However, I have just noticed that I can opt to select the "remind me later" option and carry on using word, however I can only save locally, if I try to save to my OneDrive account I am promoted with a pop up box that asks me for my credentials for d.docs.live.net

7 months later the guy could still use the local copies of word (etc) but Outlook had stopped working.

I have asked my GF- read: girlfriend- for the benefit of others to get a move on but she is even less organised than me.

It does seem that if you want the full use of Office 365 the subscription will have to be renewed.

Of course you could take out your own subscription if you have an urgent need for Office 365.

But part of the report shows details for Office, IT might produce an error code that we/he could use to sort something out.

My problem is that it is impossible to take out my own subscription.

I have been trying to take out my own subscription (office 365 personal) but I am still tagged to a shared office 365 home account.


I have asked my GF to unsubscribe me but she can remember her details. Until she can find them, I am unable to checkout my copy of office 365 personal from the MS store.

Hi Roy, I don't understand how that will help. My problem isn't with activating Office, I can't even check out of the MS store because MS can see that my MS account is already tagged to a shared account.

MS tech support did deactivate my Office account via the MS my account page, the local software still works though.

Thanks but nah.

The first link doesn't list the Office subscription. I guess because, as the nominated user, I didn't pay for it

The second link- their experience is different to mine. Office tells me that there is a problem with my subscription but lets me click on "remind me later" and then opens the program.

You will just have to get your GF to either renew the subscription or to cancel it, so that you can then set your own subscription.
