Vista 32-bit to windows 7 64bit issue

ok the issue is basically this i have no idea how i'm supposed to install this when i click the setup.exe it tells me
"This version of this file is no compatible with this version of windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see where you need an x86 (32-bit) or (64-bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

also if i try the auto run i get this error "This installation disc isn't compatible with your version of windows. To upgrade, you need the correct installation disc. For more information, check your computer's system information. To install a new copy of windows, Restart(boot) your computer using the installation disc, and then select custom (advanced)


The worthless manual tell me to click it and then chose custom install but all i get is that error how do i fix this what em i supported to do. I have already looked at the "Upgrading from Windows Vista to Windows 7 (custom installation)" witch goes through crap about backing up the files then tells me to do what the manual does.....i just don't get it my computer can run 64 bit everything tell me it can i used windows 7 upgrade adviser just to be sure.

So my question is basically how do i go from 32bit vista to 64bit win 7 if the installation disc wont run normally.

i have the full version i didn't mistakenly buy a upgrade disc.

EAsy boot from the dvd and do a clean install.

I am trying to install 64bit Windows 7 Profession upgrade.

I get the message:
"This installation disc isn't compatible with your version of windows..." when trying to run the 64bit upgrade CD from within vista.

I was able to do a clean install of the 64bit CD when booting directly form the CD, but was not able to activate.

The 32bit windows 7 upgrade CD works fine when running from within Vista, and I succssfully made a seperate partition of windows 7 32bit and it activated.

So.. Any ideas on how to get the window 7 64bit upgrade to work?

This is my machine.

You cannot upgrade from a 32bit system to a 64bit system.

You must boot from the disk and do a clean install.

I converted my laptop to 32 to 64bit yesterday after school =)
it was real fast 20 minutes since my laptop got nothing on it LOL
boot from dvd from bios then woot worked perfectly =)
now my laptop can recognize all 4GB RAM instead of 2.97GB lolz

I thought that if you purchased the retail upgrade version, the license key could be used with both the 32 and 64 bit versions. (That was true of Vista, but I don't know from personal experience about Win7.) Do you have the retail version, or some other (like the license for the free upgrade, for new PCs purchased on or after 26 June)?

A 64 bit Windows OS can't be installed as an upgrade-in-place over a 32 bit OS. Only a custom (clean) install is permitted. The 64 bit installer also can't be launched from within a 32 bit OS; you have to boot from the DVD.

I figured out what happend.

During my first attempt to install the windows 7 64bit upgrade by booting from the cd, I re-arranged my partitions, then apparently when windows 7 completed installation, it appeared that I was not upgrading as it never recognized my original windows vista install.

Case in point: When doing a clean windows 7 upgrade, don't change the partitions that would alter the original old OS partition.

Do you now have 32bit Win7 Pro installed and 64bit Win7 Pro installed on 2 different partitions?

If this is correct, just to let you know so you don't have any problems later, you are allowed to install one Win7 per key.
Decide which one you want to keep, you have 30 days to activate. If you want to keep the 64bit, you said you activated the 32bit, you will probably have to call MS to be able to use the same key. They will require you to de-activate (delete) the 32bit OS.

For the 64bit activation problem. Several people here have reported that when you do a clean install of the Win7 Upgrade version and it won't activate, you need to do a Upgrade-in-place install on it and then it will activate.
