Is the recovery partition still intact? or you could just request another key from microsoft

If they are DVD's than I am thinking you are still safe because if you put those in the DVD drive and boot into them they will reformat your partitions and bring back your recovery partition and reinstall Vista to the Factory Default settings. ( I think I could be wrong) I have to double check..

not going to work then. the three recovery disk only contain the info to boot and the drivers you need. the actual data was on that partition sorry

^^^ I think you may be wrong, before installing 7 I deleted my partition and then used the recovery discs to reinstall a fresh copy of vista and had no problems

I may be wrong, but I know that those discs worked without a recovery partition

Actually when you create recovery discs it creates the ones you would get from HP/Dell/Gateway (anyone that has recovery discs).

Will reformat your ENTIRE hard drive and restore it to when you first got it.

1) can I still revert back to vista if there is a problem with 7 that causes my system to crash? Even if I do not have a product key (for vista)?

2) say I can . . . . could I then re-upgrade to 7 using the same 741 program I received via digital river today? I allready backed up the program and Product key

Agree with DarkNovaGamer the Recovery disk will reformat everything and put the recovery partition back on the hard drive along with Vista and it's default factory settings, programs, trial ware and all that "Fun stuff"
that you don't need...

I was thinking (because I don't have a real DVD for re-installing {see above for how I plan to recover}) That I could make a recovery disc that would boot to a recovery menu right ? and then use a hard drive image (that I will save on an external HD) from my new fresh install to restore to? Is this how this new system works ?

I'm sorry? I believe the recovery discs can only install what is on the physical media. Not anything from an external storage device.

Ummmm. . . . I am speaking of windows 7, incase of serious Os damage you can use a creatable recovery tools disc that can be booted from startup, Ok

so you could in theory boot up with a recovery tools disc and choose to restore to an hard drive image which would reset you HD to an earlier time right ?

Oh sorry I misunderstood your original question.

I'm not exactly sure if that would work or not.

I am just wondering If it will completely restore windows to an earlier date not just programs,file, etc, essentially giving me a "fresh" re-installation or shall I say a carbon copy of how my system is now.

Actually, yes, there is a program out there that will help you this. It's called Acronis TrueImage Home 2010.

I just recently go myself Sylvania G Netbook, and it took just about forever to install XP onto it, do all the updates and install a range of utilities and applications that I need for work. Once I got everything the way I wanted it, I used Acronis TrueImage Home 2010 to create a bootable USB Recovery Disk. I booted from said flash disk, and created a full hard drive image of the netbook which I placed onto the same flash drive that I now keep in a safe place.

If I now cannot get Windows 7 working on my netbook as I need it (I have issues with networking and sound on the Sylvania and Windows 7), I can boot from the USB drive and restore the system back to the XP installation in less than an hour.

Acronis also let's you make other forms of resure media onto CD/DVD and such. Damn fine product.

It does, but in order to use it's backup tool in an emergency, you'll need to either reinstall Windows 7 first, then use the restore feature, or boot from the Windows 7 Disk and use the restore feature from there (I think - I've never used it, so I don't know how reliable it is)


Acronis essentially allows you create your own set of "Factory Recovery Disks" that will restore you machine to the state it was in at the time you created the backup, incuding all installed programs and user data files.
