Dark Souls 3 came out today and after it crashed on me twice (many others are experiencing crashes), I started it up a 3rd time and I suddenly blue screen at the title screen. I have never had this type of bluescreen before as any others I've had are file or program related. One was a BAD_POOL_CALLER bluescreen I had recently but I was told that Avast! had caused the crash.

So, why did my PC crash this time? I'll post the dump file below. I'm reluctant to keep trying to play DS3 because of this crash but I might try it again later and see if it does it again or if it does it with any other games I play.

I just blue screened again after setting Dark Souls 3 from windowed to full screen. I was messing with some ingame settings to see if I could run it on full screen with everything max but ssao, fxaa, and lighting set to medium. This time I didn't get the attempt to execute non executable memory blue screen though. I got the BAD_POOL_CALLER bluescreen. I set my Avast! to gaming mode prior to starting the game just in case it would interfere but I guess this happened again.

I got another BsoD this time after about 30 minutes or so of game time. It said PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. Dark Souls 3 really does not want to run for me apparently. I will go play another game which is slightly less demanding and see if that blue screens me too (which it never has before and the game's name is Tree of Savior). This is a real disappointment that DS3 can't run but oh well. Also, I forgot to mention if this is relevant at all but I did update my GPU driver before playing and I monitored my CPU/GPU temperatures. My CPU reached about 75-81C and GPU was around 61-65C A bit hot and it's never ran that hot before. I do need to clean out my fans sometime but I just never got around to it, lol. Those temperatures don't bother me much anyway unless they're the reason the BsoD is happening.

I blue screened yet again with a "MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION" error 0x0000009c or something. I was playing Tree of Savior and not Dark Souls 3 this time. The blue screen occurred around 30 minutes or so of gameplay and the PC actually froze up this blue screen. It took about 30 seconds just for the bluescreen to show up AND I had to do a hard reset. I'm getting really worried... I hope my PC can function normally with just being able to play videos and stuff for long periods of time. This stuff didn't happen yesterday. Today just isn't my day I guess. Also, I'll put this in for reference: I was running about 50-60C hot on my CPU (I think) and about the same on my GPU while playing Tree of Savior.

Just going to bump this a bit to see if anyone will look at it. I can't even game now for risk of Bsods and I'm actually afraid of doing anything other than watching videos and reading.

Edit: Also, my monitor's screen went black for a few seconds as if the monitor itself turned itself off and restarted. I'm not sure if it's a problem with my video card or not. Idle temperatures are 45-50C.

Bumping threads removes your thread from the 'unanswered threads' list what lessens the chance of someone checking your thread, fortunately for you I'm very curious and decided to check what the suggestions were since I thought there were suggestions given there are a few posts made.


You'll want to clean your system of dust and ensure your airflow is proper, dust is a very annoying cause of many problems.

I see you didn't remove Avast? Or has it been reinstalled?
If you reinstalled, ensure that you remove it again and replace it with Microsoft Security Essentials.

Please uninstall everything of AMD using Display Driver Uninstaller and install new drivers from AMD. Be sure to ONLY install the drivers using custom/advanced options.

I suspect more problems with the GPU given the 0x9C is a hardware crash, which however can also be caused by drivers & BIOS problems.
Hardware = hardware itself, dust, improper seating, wrong seating (memory), loosy cables, overheating, improper cooling (not the same as overheating), etc.

Oh, I didn't know that about bumping. My bad. At the time I was kinda panicky and thought I should make separate posts for uploading my dumps.

So while I was waiting for a reply for this thread I actually got a reply on another forum and this is what they said:

"This dump indicates your Network Card driver was faulting. There is an update available from Gigabyte."
(Listed dump, not sure which.)
"The rest of your dumps are all about drivers accessing incorrect memory addresses or referencing invalid addresses. The usual suspect in your case could be the Overclock combined with high temperatures can cause the CPU to incorrectly process instructions. Disable the overclock in the BIOS to see if the BSOD stop"

And they also told me to update my Atheros LAN driver, Intel® Rapid Storage Technology, Intel Management Engine Interface and Intel INF drivers which I did. I also updated my Avast! to the newest version and completely removed my GPU driver with Driver Sweeper and reinstalled it with the 16.3.2 package (not the quick installation but the everything package) of AMD Radeon Crimson.

I was told on there to reduce my OC clock down in case it is the main problem but I may not do that until I get new fans and memory installed with my PC upgrade @ topic here: http://www.sevenforums.com/pc-custo...ry-cooling-fans-cleaning-out.html#post3238271

I'm hoping that when I do upgrade my PC (where I will definitely test the memory before gaming @ 1866ghz XMP profile if available with memtest to see if the memory is stable as the motherboard is probably going to down clock it to 1600 by default), I will find that the dust and overheating was the major problem. Aside from the driver updates, at least.

I find it very funny, I have checked the dumps and logs of your uploads here and over there and I'm unable to find a dump with the bugcheck 0xD1, this makes me wondering where the moderator get that from.

Hmm... That's strange. XD

I think I will down clock my CPU soon to 3.4Ghz default since I've gotta wait 4-7 business days for my hardware to come in. I may do this so I can test gaming out and see if I still blue screen. I will upload dump logs if I do crash. Hopefully I won't since if the fault is temperature related due to dust/poor air circulation then down clocking will reduce my CPU temps by a good chunk.

I didn't test it with the 4.2Ghz because I know I'd get extremely high temperatures but by disabling my Turbo Boost OC, I was able to stably play Dark Souls 3 at max settings in full screen mode with 60FPS with some dips to 45 in areas (its port is pretty poorly optimized but oh well). There isn't too much of a difference between 3.4Ghz normal clock and 4.2Ghz while doing normal browsing tasks but hopefully when I change out my fans and redo the paste on my CPU for better temperatures, I will get slightly more performance out of DS3.

My temps are for idle PC/browsing and gameplay:
IDLE: CPU 4.2 @ 37-50-55C - CPU 3.4 (Turbo Boost off) @ 28-37-42C

LOAD: CPU 4.2 @ Up to 80C - CPU 3.4 (Turbo Boost off) @ 39-44-56C 720p medium/max - 1080p full screen 52-55-64 max

GPU LOAD: @ 59-62 max medium settings, 58-64 average - 69 max 1080p

FYI, it is highly recommended that you stop all OC while troubleshooting, OC could make the situation only worse!
