Windows 7 vs Windows 10: which do you find the best? Why?

I've always preferred gadgets and modern stuff over older things, so obviously I have Windows 10 installed dual booting with Windows 7 Ultimate.

But I find Windows 7 to be still, if anything, the most beautiful OS by MS so far. I like the modern side of Windows 10 but I simply cannot get used to it's looks. Every single time I boot back into Windows 7 I feel like I'm back home from a bad trip.

Do you feel the same? Why?

Rafa mate I prefer 7 over 10 after trying it simply because it is so simple in its GUI. Then there are the aggressive a tactics of Microsoft with 10 and in particular how they can access data from your machine at will,

Now I know you can switch off a lot of those options about sending data to Microsoft but I watched a good YouTube last night detailing how even if you switch those channels off they are and can be reinstated by Microsoft without you knowing. That YouTube is this one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1kGMCfb2xw it runs for a while.

I don't know about you but I value my privacy as much as one can an I do not like being bullied into using something I do not like or need and now we have manufacturers jump on board like Intel and Asus who will make their products to only support Windows 10 - again very annoying and it really does come down to money eh?

Now if you are thinking of reverting back to 7 then please be aware that doing so is creating a lot of issues with a load of members doing just that only to find their machines are not working properly.

Me when I used 10 I chose to clean all the drive before I reinstalled 7 on it simply because I knew for sure any files come what may would be completely and utterly deleted. I know that means a lot of work but hey it is worth it. When it comes to updates immediately after installing 7 I set updates to what is in my pic and you need to watch for KB3035533 especially - that is as well as installing what I have outlined below.

Now just as a by the by on all my machine now I run the disable batch file from this Upgrade to Windows 10 Update - Enable or Disable in Windows 7 or 8.1 - Windows 10 Forums

and I also use this on a daily basis because even the most innocuous looking updates can contain 10 files
Ultimate Outsider - Software Downloads < one just uses the Control Panel and after the initial set up one just uses the button in my pic.

Edit I meant to add you can use Classic Shell to use 10 in a 7 type interface but even so that YouTube has got me concerned. Classic Shell - Start menu and other Windows enhancements

While I don't agree about Win7 being the most beautiful OS (it's a transparent nonsense IMHO), I would never install Win10 because I consider it a spyware.

Hello Derek now I am a bit confused by your post mate on one hand you tell me I am spewing garbage again then say you know where I am getting my info from - the video.

Now personally I feel every time I say something against Windows 10 I get jumped on by someone (not particularly you) - who actually likes it and never get any positive feedback.

The video I came across by pure chance - I wasn't looking for such stuff - well it sort of laid out what I have always thought was happening or is this a work of fiction - will I find those settings in 10 if I try it again ? - I don't know anymore because all I want is to use a system that is not intrusive or bullying and that is just what Microsoft are doing in my mind.
Perhaps I had better stop offering opinions and stick to stuff I know are fact ie hardware etc.

Anyway I am seriously thinking of going Linux as I have on my secondary laptop - a shame because I have a lot of friends especially in Windows 7 forum and have learned a lot about computing from them. I don't know but I had a great friend in Gary Britton (like many others) who guided me through a whole host of stuff and I often wonder what he would have said about it all.

Sorry to Rafa a bit off topic my apologies if I have ruined what you were looking for.

You've started a few threads on this and people you supposedly trust explained things to you yet you continue to spew all the rhetoric from all over the internet.

I don't care if you like W10 or not, but when you ask about things and then are given reasonable responses from people you trust you choose to go right back to the outrageous internet stories.

My comment about the video is because that guy is crazy as a loon.

You can hate W10 all you want but at least point out facts instead of B.S.

Ok I give in and I can accept that 10 is as safe as houses - in other words what I see in articles and videos like that one are really fiction? If it was fiction then it was very cleverly done at least you have to admit that.

There is nothing wrong with 7 in my mind and yes I do not like the GUI in 10 it just seems to me that no one seems to actually know what Microsoft are doing - all a but apathetic to me.

I don't think it's cleverly done, just people feeding each other back and forth.

My point was you appeared to have your questions and concerns answered by people you trust from here, then you turn right around and go right back to the hype.

Doesn't say much about the faith you have in those people, I really don't care if you like it I just can't understand how you can switch back and forth like that.

I'm not saying 10 is perfect or everyone should get it but there are plenty of B.S. stories out there and you need to at least keep some facts in what you say if you want it to mean anything.

Stick to 7 or Linux or whatever you want, you are talking about things you heard or read and instead of actually checking to see if it was fact you just pass it along because it sounds outrageous.

That's gossip column stuff or people feeding off the Anti-Microsoft wave to gain activity on their site/blog/youtube channel, etc.

I have moved to Win 10 for my "operational" system. I still dual boot with Win 7 but only because there is one application that I need that will not work on Win 8/8.1/10. There is a lot of negative Internet posts about Win 10 but I have none of those "supposed" concerns.

My recording studio software and hardware is all Win 10 compatible. My audio recording interface unit latency dropped from (reliable) 6ms to 4ms with Windows 10.

However, the hardware can be an issue for those that want to upgrade. My advice is, do not upgrade "old" hardware. It may or may not work and if it does work it may not really work well.

Well it is not that I do not trust anyone I know Derek it just seems to me that each time someone I know well tells am the system is ok I come across articles from what I am assuming are reliable and genuine sources like ZDNet and techsupport that point out the features of 10 that I do have concerns over. Surely all the hype as you put it cannot all be wrong??
I am concerned over my privacy more than anything else and accessing my emails for example is an invasion of my rights if indeed that is what they can do is downright unethical - so are you happy with them accessing your data and using it? - if again that is what they can do? Plus I consider foisting updates on a user whether the user wants them or not is tantamount to burying your head in the sand and hoping for the best and trust that Microsoft is acting on your best interests.
Look what I am getting at is that one just blithely accepts things at face value then no wonder the world is the place it is.

I myself have read on tomshardware.com forums about Windows 10 a very convincing explanation for all the forced updates; it says that what MS are trying to accomplish with this is, in the end, to improve their new OS which will be their last OS(in terms of name anyway) by making sure every user gets updated and have their Windows 10 improved upon.

The only case in which I would be concerned about MS and their new updating system would be if I were a criminal of some sort and were hiding evidence on my computer. Since that's not my case, I don't have any reason to be concerned, I do believe MS are simply trying to make sure their Win10 users are getting the necessary updates so it can be improved. Remember that on previous versions of Windows, with the option to disable updates, most people wouldn't update and then have problems because of it as consequence.

Maybe MS are being too aggressive with this new tactic for having their new OS improved upon, but since I'm not a criminal with evidence hidden on my computer, I don't think I have much to fear.

Yes that is ok rafa if you don't have any "history" and yes if the updates are to make the system better but accessing emails?? and data. Now what if you were sending sensitive and or personal info say to your wife or girlfriend?

I think that one should be given the choice of signing off on anyone accessing your data such as that over blatantly using it - that smacks of a dictatorial state of affairs. If Microsoft were to put out tomorrow that option of allowing them to access your data by any individual doing said signing off on it then I would more than pleased to try it again because the two times I have tried it a) I did not like that wretched panel interface b) the bugs that constantly had me trying to get the set up right.

I think what makes me so anti at the moment is the aggressive way that this has all been done and that the support for 7 has been apparently cut back two years.

I have been using 7 for as long as it has been out and I just don't see why it is no longer any good.

Again I am sorry for wrecking your thread mate but I am not one to just lie down and take the crap. I expect the best and most out of what I pay for and I feel I am only going to get what they want me to have and also pay for the privilege.

Last thing I will post on this matter is that one only has to look at the number of members of this forum who have tried 10 and have come back to 7 and have had real issues with the back move.

I don't believe this one bit. Are you suggesting that Microsoft does care to improve their OS? The user experience went downhill after Windows XP. And it's getting worse with each new version. Microsoft is trying to get everyone on Win10 because data mining and advertising will make them more money than Win7 users. Simple as that.

I too believe MS are trying to make more money out of Windows 10, but then why wouldn't they be doing so??
They're not Linux, they're not a non-profit organization, right? So why not take the opportunity to make more money out of it??

That though, doesn't discount the fact that they're also trying to make a better OS by using our personal information. They're not gonna read or care about every single message sent or received on my system are they? To me, they're simply using all the info they can to improve our experience with their new OS and why not, make some more money out of it? After all they're Microsoft, not save the whales or something.

So in essence rafa you agree to work for nothing?? especially if it is your intellectual property so to speak?? For example if you came up with a brilliant idea that would improve their system and was just discussing this with say a friend or in a blog and good old Microsoft gets hold of it and improve their system - then you have just given your ideas away for nothing for however it improves their system. That would be a real feelgood situation at least for me.:sarc:

I think you are set on using 10 and good luck to you but as I said there are plenty who have had multiple problems trying to get back to 7 when they find they don't like 10.

I think the only people that have a valid gripe regarding Win 10's data collection are those with a very low data cap from their isp.

The data that is collected isn't personal in nature as MS is not interested in you personally. The data they collect is for statistical purposes. Do you really think MS would put time and effort into reading the personal emails you sent to your mistress or whatever? We're talking about billions of records, way too much data for someone at MS to ever even look at a single record. They want to know what errors are being encountered, what programs were being run, what hardware/drivers were in place, what time of the day, etc... Analyzing this data and looking for patterns could lead to a more stable OS in the long run.

IMO. since MS is giving away Win 10, it makes sense for them to say, "We give you this software for free and, in exchange, you allow us to collect data." Maybe MS should do something like they did a couple years back where they had Win 8 with Bing that was less expensive. They could sell Win 10 with Data for a lower price (free?) but then charge more for a version where the user can completely opt out of the data collection.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.

I couldn't agree more with you. That's what I was referring to when I said I don't mind MS using our personal info, I meant the way we use it and the results we obtain or not and how. In my book at least, that's a more than valid way for MS to make a better OS than ever.

I'm not "bent on using Windows 10", but I do, as I stated in my first post prefer modern stuff over older ones. And I approve of what MS are doing. That said, I do still prefer Windows 7's design, I think it's better looking than any other OS while being practical at the same time.

"Windows 7 vs Windows 10: which do you find the best? Why?"

I would have phrased it a bit differently, "Which is the lesser of the two evils?"

To get rid of 10, (completely), I had to reinstall 7, then, back to XP, , ,

As with most of the previous Os's, it's simply a matter of time before 10 overtakes 7. Not only because in about a year and half at most it'll be a better OS but also because MS will cut Windows 7's support altogether in 2020. Then all we'll have available will be 8.1 and 10, and 8.1, as statistics will tell you, was and still is a complete failure when it comes to popularity.

Ok so my hobby horse re 10 taking data at will - is going to make 10 a better system?

If so can someone tell me in non jargonistic and plain language then how because as I stated before when I did install 10 on two machines one would work at a reasonably slow pace because I found it so difficult to navigate to the simple things like Computer and Control Panel and the second machine froze solid and I had to to go back and reinstall 7.

Derek our moderator told me earlier that I keep coming back with stuff that I have seen that is rubbish re 10 but surely every article/link criticising 10 by the sheer weight of what is put out cannot be wrong about everything it states?
For an example that video I linked/watched please correct me if I am wrong but it seemed to me to be taken from an installation that fellow was running with the screenshots of 10 while he was running the 10 system or was he showing some cleverly made up mock up of a 10 installation.

I know that 10 will overtake 7 in a while and I think I saw it quoted maybe even by 2018 and that to me will be a very sad day.

They say money is the root of all evil and well is that just a fact:(
