How to remove Windows 10 upgrade updates in Windows 7 and 8

I am seriously considering not updating Windows until after July 29, now, just to avoid problems.

If I do ever upgrade, it won't be within this free upgrade period. It'll be when I'm good and ready to. My systems run fine with 7 on. This "free" offer has done nothing to entice me on to Windows 10 yet, in fact it's put me off it a little with the way they've been ramming it down our throats.
If I want it in future, I'll go and buy retail versions, as I did with Windows 7. And if I still don't find it appealing then I'll switch to something else. 2020 is a few years away yet and I'm sure, by that time, there will be other options to consider. Windows 10 might even be something that appeals to me more as it develops over time. But as it stands now, I'm just not interested.

Exactly right. If I want a copy of an OS badly enough, I'll pay for it.

Sorry OvenMaster, I thought you meant upgrading.
I've turned off WU now anyway. Not because the updates particularly worry me, I just avoid the ones I don't feel are necessary, but because of the way Windows update fails to work a lot of the time lately. I just manually download the security updates and skip the rest, unless it's designed to fix crashes, problems. Most of the recommended updates of late don't appear to be adding anything of benefit.
My system has been running fine and I have no problem spending 10 minutes a month downloading and installing the security updates manually.

I just hope they don't stop manual updates altogether! I think that's highly unlikely though. While I use WU in my VM's (when it works) for testing, I don't use it on my main systems.
So manual update files are a big help for me at the moment.

Manual updates have been a lifesaver for me.

I have had updates fail to install so many times. When I go to manual updates they install every time.

Therefore MS will stop them.

Backup your windows 7 install, upgrade to 10, make sure it activates, restore windows 7 from an image backup then you are set, when ready do a clean install or upgrade at any time This way your system will always have some type of entitlement.

I was considering doing this a few months ago, but after much thought I decided that there isn't much point me doing that really. By the time (if ever) I do decide to upgrade, I'll have upgraded to new system/hardware by then. I'm happy just to buy a boxed product I can transfer whenever I like, if that's the case.

If you are good at deciphering xml and other files. You could download the file and extract file using 7-zip.


Here is what I am using to block windows 10. https://www.grc.com/never10.htm I know some people here don't like GRC. Grc does have some good tools though. I don't think my computer will be supported for 10 and possibly for newer Linux system do to a Intel graphics driver issue.

This is my method:

Set WU to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them"
As the updates appear in my WU window, I click each one by one. To the right is the message "More information" RIGHT click that - screen goes to MS website, where the details of the u/g can be inspected. If it is plain that this is a Win 10 interloper, I
right click the KB and choose "Hide Update."

Next KB: repeat as above but if I cannot make out whether this update is OK, I scroll down on the MS site and look for "All supported x64-based versions of Windows 7" - move across to "Download Now" Save to downloads and the only part of this KB that is acceptable for my system, can be downloaded later as a 'Standalone'.

Of the 3 Optional updates in my WU window this morning:

KB3123862 - Updated capabilities to upgrade Windows 8.1 and Windows 7. I hid it without download.

KB3139923 - I found the 7/64 version and downloaded as Standalone, for installation later.

KB3156417 - is the Roll Up. I found the 7/64 version and downloaded as Standalone, for installation later.

MS has forced me to do this, but in a way I am glad they did. It forced my brain into a corner and made me think of ways to defeat what I see as the imposition of 10 onto my machine.

I do same look at every update just in case and have GWX from the Ultimate Outsider on my computer hoping never to be invaded.

But looking I do have some of the updates warned against. Like K2952664 several times and I had unistalled it and then hid it. But it came back obviously but still not upgraded yet.

I did have a scare last month when booted and suddenly realized it was downloading updates when no authority from myself.Panicked to be honest and switched it off. Booted again and again it started. So started in safe mode and did recovery, scanned and it said would lose lots of programs - like Firefox Thunderbird etc and thought can reinstall and luckily have the lot backed up on ext HD - anyway did and did lose programs and data off them but got back emails etc with Recuva.

so I skate along and do wish I dint have this nightmare. Just want to use my OS - W& SP1 which I paid for and chose. Not have something forced on me. Like many here and elsewhere. And live in hope.
Would like a bit of tech info like do this then do that as didnt understand how you did what you did. See cant even explain.
Simple terms if you have the time and patience would be appreciated by me and I suspect many others.
Like do this click here than go etc. As if to a simpleton.

Oh wow! It really seems like Microsoft is trying to force everyone to upgrade to Windows 10, when not everyone wants to upgrade! I've heard that now people's computers are upgrading without their permission! Hopefully all of these updates will go away when Windows 10 won't be free anymore. Also when you say you did a recovery, do you mean from an image backup?! It sounded like it as you lost a few programs!
