BSOD when PC shuts down with USB HDD attached

For some years I have used an external HDD (USB) as a backup device, and wrote a script which, when backing up is complete, shuts down the PC. This has worked for at least five years without a hitch.

The past week however, I have started to get a BSOD - DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE; 0x09F - when the PC shuts down. If I shut down without the HDD plugged in, no problem. The HDD itself seems fine and the backups complete OK.

I haven't installed any Windows updates that might account for this, so any idea why a stable system may suddenly start behaving like this?

Hi,
Have you tried a different USB enclosure, or USB thumb drive?

Try to reinstall the driver. I can provide instructions if necessary.

Yes - I need to test whether this happens if I use a different external HDD (it's one I bought, not a 'home-made' one, Toshiba I think, but not sure as I write this).

Which driver would I need to reinstall exactly?

Hi,

You'll want to reinstall the device driver for the hard drive.

Start --> Search for devmgmt.msc

Run it

Look under "Disk Drives" and right click your drive, select Uninstall, and click all the positive options. (OK, Yes, Allow, Continue)

Unplug the USB HDD when finished.

Restart the PC.

Plug the USB HDD in again. Does the BSOD still occur?

The dumps blame a certain driver which is unknown to me, to identify this driver I would need more information.

Oh, right Josh - yes, I was stupidly thinking I needed to reinstall a 3rd. party driver for some reason.. So anyway, I uninstalled the drive, unplugged it and restarted the PC (the PC wouldn't shut down first time round, waited several minutes then hit 'reset' - seems OK since) and then plugged the drive back in. Ran a shortened version of the backup with auto shutdown - and all was fine. So maybe things will be OK. I'll wait till I do a full backup next before I say it's fixed, though I can't see why the backup itself (using XXCopy) should make a difference. I'll post back if the problem persists. Thanks!

What was the driver mentioned, 'axe0'? If I get another BSOD I'll follow the instructions and upload again. Thank you.

I would recommend to follow the instructions now, if another BSOD happens any later than today I won't analyze it until next week as I will be on vacation.

SaiK075C.sys is the cause, unfortunately I am still unable to find where it belongs to.
Many sites claim that it is from Saitek, but it seems I do not come much further.

That figures - I have had no end of problems with the Saitek X52 (game controller/joystick) attached to my PC - the software has caused a lot of issues (which Saitek/MadCatz have been quite co-operative with, in trying to help me sort out, it must be said). I don't know what that sys file is specifically, but if I get the BSOD problem back, I'll contact Saitek again.

Beat me to it there axe0 I was out for the day.

Try to add .bak to the .sys, and test, I guess since Saitek controllers are also USB, their drivers messed up something.

For such a suggestion you should add recovery possibilities in case things go wrong, it is not known what the driver is from and as such we do not know what may be affected when changing it.

I ran a full backup yesterday, with auto-shutdown and no BSOD, but I'll wait a while yet before I conclude this is fixed. Thanks.
