I am using windows 8.1 on my laptop having an i5 processor, 2GB graphics card and 8GB DDR 3 RAM. I know this is a windows 7 forums but my problem is a general one - slow startup and shut downs of machines. I want to disable certain services from autorunning. This will help me in speeding up my machines.

Using Technet's systeinternals app, I did analysis of my laptop and found the following entries. I ran sfc /scannow in both normal and safe modes and found nothing

I don't want to mess with AMD radeon and right click context menu entries. They are the services that I used regularly.

This image is made out of 15 stitched screenshots that I took.

Here is the link to the image. It is a very high resolution image therefore I did not embed here in my post.

Which of the services can I safely disable without damaging my operating system?

I found no errors when I checked my drives by going to properties>tools>error checking.

I also found no errors when I ran memory diagnostic tools than run upon restarting.

Moreover, I daily run Ccleaner application to cleanup my temporary files.

Press the start button, in the search box type "msconfig" (without the quotes) press Enter. In the context menu that opens right click on msconfig.exe at the top and choose "Run as Administrator". In the window that opens click the "Services" tab. Click the checkbox at the bottom left that says "Hide all Windows services" That wil leave you a list of your services. Decide which ones you really need to open on boot up probably only your Anti Virus.

I have already done that. It also showed my Radeon settings and some other ones that I disabled. After that, those software crashed or misbehaved.

What services did you disable and what exactly do you mean by they "misbehaved"?

That was a couple of months ago, so I don't really remember completely.

But here's it.

1. My screen appeared stretched as if graphics driver wasn't installed (I disabled Radeon service)

2. My audio wasn't working (I disabled conextant audio service)

3. Evernote sync showed error (I disabled Evernote service)

4.I disabled USB safely remove software too that ran in startup. It is a good software that comes handy when in some situations, the native windows safely remove option doesn't allow you to remove and shows a warning. Since, I disabled it, it didn't run on startup and started only after I clicked its program shortcut.

There were other two services to that I disabled and this affected their startup. They won't start. I don't remember what apps were they.

Frankly I'm not sure what to advise especially as this all seems to have happened a couple of months ago and you can't rememeber parts of it. Perhaps you should consider a clean install?

You should carefully disable the services to be disabled, msconfig will warn you for this before you restart your computer. Re-enable those services again. The safest things to enable are the start-ups. It looks like you've disabled some services that shouldn't be disabled because some of these can't be just enabled again unless you open the program that needs it (It will automatically enable the services they need).
