New LG 55' 4K TV question about resolution connected to PC

(I put this under General Discussion for the sake of not knowing where my question should go)

Pretty simple. I had a 42' LG working with the native res. 1920x1080 all is well via desktop and browsing via FF and IE through HDMI cable connected to my GTX970

Swapped out TV's just had to re-plug in the HDMI to video card / HDMI to cable box and power and the res is 3260x?? looks tiny but thats ok (i'm at work so not in front of TV)

My issue is the desktop looks fine but browsing everything is centered on the screen see screenshot. Is there anyway to correct this so all the pages fit? I tried the zoom feature and ctrl. key but it doesn't expand the center just gets bigger. If I knock the res down to 1920x1080 of course it looks fine but any 4k res. is centers it again. IDK if this is just the way it has to be since i'm using the TV as my monitor.

I went in to the Nvidia control panel for scaling / under/over scanning but that didn't work. I think thats mostly for the desktop area I never had to mess with that. I'm thinking maybe reinstall the drivers but thats a long shot.

thx for your input!

Hi,
Not really 4k is way too expensive :)
You're basically in a "nut shell from a nut" having a scaling issue

The large resolution you switched to the worse the problem or the smaller everything gets although the window fills the screen.
1920-1080 should be used but also so should a display port not hdmi.
You'll only be able to get 4k out of a display port and even then you'll still have scaling issues.
hdmi-cable-displayport-vga-dvi.jpg

Quite frankly the best way I've found to fill the screen is using a pc capable t.v. which will have a vga or display port.
Then it is a simple matter of having a normal monitor connected which is native 1920-1080
Then use Winkey+p and select Duplicate for the larger screen.

I only have a t.v. with a vga port so that is the extent of what I have used but the real trick with even that is scaling to fill the larger screen and the graphic's card will dictate how well that is accomplished :)

That makes sense but all these TV's don't have a display port. There was one Panasonic last year that had it but its discontinued. Also with the display port monitors can benefit from g sync if they have a Nvidia card.

Right now i'm back at 1080 1920x1080. I really don't need 4k to surf the web. When I watch a movie or game i'll go back to the native res. but i'm still searching to see if it can resloved this scaling issue.

It was only $999 on sale from $1299 LG 55UH7700

Hi,
Indeed gsync will only work with a display port :)

Yep this is not a pc compatible t.v. it would have at the least a vga port and ideally would have a display port too.

These 4k t.v. as it stands is mainly for cable boxes which again only serve 1080i or 1080p60 which is what my Xfinity box settings show available.

There probably is a half cocked happy medium adjusting your dpi settings to 125% and dealing with page zoom inside Chrome/ Firefox.... settings.

I've only connected to my t.v. so far with a little laptop which has shit graphic's and yes I used a vga and hdmi to connect to it
hdmi looks better but is trickier than vga to find a happy medium.
At least you have a better gpu to test with :)

Before too long I'll hook my asus rig to my 40" t.v. it's just not a high priority at this point Xfinity is okay for now.
Still pondering if I want amazon prime or netflix
I hate silverlight so much I'll probably go with amazon prime just to avoid installing silverlight :)

Hi,
Yea I need a larger APC battery backup to be able to move my gaming rig over there
That's another couple hundred bucks I just have not done yet :)

t.v. is about 14 foot away so I suppose I could just run a couple long cables but hate to do that
Long cables loose signal shorter the better plus costs less so money is better spent on another battery backup instead.

True pc compatible and 4k t.v.'s are well north of 1000.us :D
No cable provider sends 4k signal anyway
Be good for bluray.. dvd's though ;)

Post #1 puzzles me - I've never known anyone use a browser full screen on a 16:9 monitor. Web pages are usually fixed width - around 1020px - so I view Firefox etc windowed at about 1200 - 1000 px (on a 1920-1080 screen). Anything else has huge blank spaces. Although you can zoom a webpage to fill a widescreen, the vertical size would be stupid and unusable. The OP is surprised when a 1020px webpage looks tiny on a 4K screen.

When Windows 8 first came out, IIRC IE would only run full screen, and the Google logo looked tiny and ridiculous in a vast white expanse.

Surely widescreens are only used for movies + TV, Photoshop etc - and browsers should be used windowed ?

Wikipedia is one of the few websites that use % layout - and so Wiki can be dragged to fill a screen of any size/aspect. It is hard to read on widescreen IMHO. You can even stretch Wiki across an extended desktop . . .

Hi,
It's only puzzling because the page zoom is so off from the window size
No difference in a 24" 16:9 and a 40 or 55" 16:9 it all scales the same even going downward to 1600-900..

His problem is he wasn't scaling from 1920-1080 he adjusted the resolution to fill the screen instead so there is no scaling going on.

What he needs is a 1920-1080 native monitor as primary and use duplicate to the 55" monitor so it scales properly.

You can even stretch Wiki across an extended desktop . . .

I just wanted to see if it would work at that res and when it didn't I posted to see if there was something I was missing. I'm using the 1920x1080 now which is fine I messed with the scaling and under/overscan through the video card and tried different methods and having checking a lot of the tabs I had open in FF some websites actually looked normal but tiny and most had the dead space on the sides. It's fine I know now its just not possible to view pages in that super high res.

Hi,
Adjust the page zoom on Firefox or use Ctrl+++ keys :)
I'd usually use a page zoom of 150%

Hi,
Adjust the page zoom on Firefox or use Ctrl+++ keys :)
I'd usually use a page zoom of 150%

I tried that all it does is take the middle section and make it bigger with the space on the sides being zoomed in its doesn't widen the section to fit :)

Hi,
One day I'll hook my rig to my 40" sony 120Hz and see what it does
Until then I have no idea :)
Fortunately I also have a 24" 144Hz monitor in case I have scaling issues as you do so I can just use duplicate from the 144Hz and that will allow the scaling to have a base to go by.
Then as long as aspect ratio is working correctly all should work well.

But I do not expect issues because my t.v. has a vga port :p
