What is a good e-mail to replace Windows Live 2012.

What is a good e-mail to replace Windows Live 2012.

I don't want to pay for Microsoft's PAY THROUGH THE NOSE Office Suite just to get OUTLOOK. I want to be able to use my MSN, LIVE, etc e-mail addresses and be able to store my e-mails on my computer, just like Windows Live Mail allowed me to do. I have 3 desktops all running Windows 7 Pro 64.

Thunderbird has similar feature set to Outlook but is 100% cheaper

I've started using Fossamail, it's a fork of Thunderbird. Uses a lot less memory than Thunderbird and has some of the bloat stripped out. All the TB add-ons still work. Plus it's optimised for 64-bit and has more options for IMAP than WLM.

I've tried a few. eMclient is good but the free version is limited to 2 accounts.

Also with eM Client, I found it best to Exit it [if it is sitting in the icon notification tray/background working] before any Windows Restart or Shutdown. Otherwise, it often generates a please wait, checking/rebuilding database upon next Windows session.

I find that EM Client v6 works best for me. What are the differences between v6 & v7?

Not much difference about the over-all operations; version 7 moved some things around along the top menu bar -- I have to click on Menu or Refresh to access some of the stuff.

OT, but I'm interested to know what advantages eM has over Gmail. I use Gmail as you do - as an aggregator for several emails. Are you saying you prefer eM as the primary interface?

If you ever used 'Outlook Express' (years ago), and you found it useful, helpful and easy to use, you'll love the new "O.E. Classic". It's free for one or two email addresses.

Then for the Geek, Nerd, Hacker or just plain Windows enthusiast, there's always a way to Re-Activate "Windows Mail" that first came out in Vista, to replace Outlook Express. I use it myself, and I call it Outlook Express on steroids.

I have five email accounts and I have them all set up in Windows Mail, so all my email comes into my computer every three minutes all day long, as long as I have my PC turned on.
I also like that it's 100% compatible with the 'Windows Address Book'.

Have you had this problem occur: If you try opening your e-mail account on Outlook Mail.Com, then try operating your Windows Live Mail on the same computer, the account you opened on Outlook Mail now refuses to receive mail on Windows Live.

This has happened to 2 of my computers, each on different accounts. I think the only "cure" is to go through an uninstall/reinstall while making sure you've backed up all e-mail storage folders. It's a real pain but it does work.

Although I have tried EMClient, I actually use Thunderbird for when I need to be dealing with Mail, (or Calendar), for a major clean-up/review, I can receive several thousand mails per month. (My comment above was just a workaround for the restrictions on the Free EM).

I have access to Outlook 2016, But do not need exchange integration.

I use Thunderbird as it Integrates better with Google Services (Mail Calendar Etc). It has an add-on that displays a Live, Editable, copy of my Calendar(s) in a Tab so is convenient to integrate mail and appointments

Most of the time I actually use the Web Interface for Google Services or, as I am an Android Phone & Tablet user, I use the built in android apps

Microsoft are in the process of "updating" their free mail services and this has already stopped Outlook Mail (Sign in to your Microsoft account), working with the older clients, Windows mail has already gone, and I think that Windows Live Mail 2012 will not be long, (although no dates have been given as yet).

Live Mail and Windows Mail should still work with other accounts but not the MS one, I believe they are moving to the Industry Standard IMAP standard to provide options previously supported by old MS Proprietary Software in the clients. The accounts can also accessed directly by the web

Are you using the old settings or IMAP? If you haven't set them up as IMAP, then you have to remove your accounts then re-add them using IMAP settings.

MS has dropped support for the DeltaSync Protocol and moved the new Outlook email over to Exchange ActiveSync I believe.
DeltaSync was the sync method used in WLM 2012.

They tried to push out a patch to add EAS to WLM 2012, but it was a disaster, the folders just wouldn't sync properly. The patch was then pulled and MS announced they were dropping WLM.

IMAP does work perfectly fine, although sometimes it's definitely not as quick to sync folders as DeltaSync was.
Also, WLM is a little limited on options when it comes to IMAP.

I'm not sure this is completely accurate. Gmail can be set up the same way.

If to use the IMAP protocol rather than the Older, Simpler POP3 Protocol, then the data is held on robust web based servers and accessed from your system when required. the local client may make local cache copies for off-line working but this is not specified by the protocol.

Any work performed on this Mail Server Edit / Delete / Move Etc is secure and available to any device with the required credentials.

With the old POP3 system which is designed for Dial up Networking, then the work is performed on the Local system after the mail is downloaded, (manually or on a schedule). POP3 is only suitable for a single system point of access and any issues on the local machine relies on personal backups for security, also even if you set to leave copies on the server you cannot access the data from more than one location and be certain that you are accessing the latest copy as the one on the server may have already been actioned from another system that is not On at all times

If you have an always on internet connection you should use IMAP as the mail system works in real time, even if the mail system is only run intermittently The link operates from the mail server to the local system so that the data is always up to date automatically

I use IMAP to access and manage my mail from any of three PC systems Two Phones and Two tablets, and I also have the option to access from any internet computer on the planet, My data is always there and live wherever I access it from

Like you Barman, I do prefer IMAP over POP on my PC's.

I have my Android phone and tablets using Exchange ActiveSync though. That's how it sets mine up as default and I tend to leave it like that for the contacts and calendar sync. I've yet to find a way to sync those using IMAP. EAS seems to sync faster than IMAP too, at least from my experience.

I think the only free desktop client that supports EAS is eMclient. Unless there's a way to do it in TB/Fossamail but I haven't worked that out yet.

Edit: I just realised that the Hotmail accounts I have set up as EAS. But, I'm unsure whether the Gmail accounts do, in fact, use IMAP on an Android device?

Pegasus Mail - "best thing since sliced bread"

Pegasus Mail is a very mature and highly functional free email client capable of running multiple users and protocols, distribution lists, mailboxes, filters, rules etc. See Pegasus Mail and Mercury and read the overview.

It is structured as a set of text files (most of which are user readable) contained within a simple set of directories which can be moved around, copied, renamed, whatever. The tool itself can be "installed" anywhere and pointed at these directories. I put installed in quotes because it isn't like most Windows tools with tentacles everywhere and a hundred entries in the Registry - it's a program that loads down to the directory you tell it. Novel eh!

I can only suggest you have nothing to lose by trying it. If you have emails currently sitting on a server you can install Pegasus Mail and set it up so as to read your emails but not delete them, so if you don't like it you can still access your emails from another client.

I'm still using WLM 2012 as it still works fine for me. I use it configured POP3 from multiple computers and have never had issues with that. MS said that WLM 2012 would stop working after the end of June 2016 but so far it's still going strong.

I have tried many of the suggested email clients. I don't care for the MS suggestion of the mail client that comes with Win 10 and also didn't care for eM Client or Fossamail. I've used Thunderbird in the past and like it so will probably switch to TB when and if WLM stops working for me.
