Solved BSOD and random freeze, error 0x0000001e

Hi guys,

I am having some problems with my notebook, I hope someone could try to understand what is wrong with it!

I've had my Asus Zenbook for almost 4 years and couldn't be happier, but over the last couple of months I've been experiencing unusual slow downs, random freeze of the computer (especially when browsing Chrome for a couple of hours) that I can only solve by turning the notebook off via power button, and, more recently, BSOD.

Sometimes I get an error message "Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work now." BSOD are not always the same, but most of the time they refer to 0x000001E o 0x000001A, with messages like "0x000000BE an attempt was made to write to read-only memory" or relative to "Memory dump" problems.

These problems disapper in Safe Mode.

I am really not good with computers but I have tried to research as much as possible. Tell me if some more info is needed. I've asked around and they suggested to check the integrity of RAM, SSD, CPU, Motherboard (see below), nw I am thinking there might be some faulty driver, but I cannot figure out what to try at this point.

Troubleshooting attempts so far:

- Antivirus scan with different softwares (Windows Defender, Avast, Malwarebytes): nothing found;
- System recovery with new install of OS: nothing changed;
- BIOS update to most recent version;
- Notebook was updated with all Asus and Windows definitions;
- Update of all the drivers (note: I have problems even without adding external devices);
- ScanDisk of SSD (sometimes this is automatically launched when I turn on the computer, but no errors are detected);
- I've checked the SSD with Defraggler and it appears to be in healthy conditions + 21% fragmentation and Random Read Speed over 20 Mb / sec
- RAM tests: I cannot launch the Windows Memory diagnostic tool, but I've used MemTest86 from USB boot. MemTest does not detect errors for all CPU, but I cannot run the last two tests (Bit Fade and Hammer, I've looked around and this seems to be a problem relative to the firmware);
- I have tested the CPU, chipset and motherboard with Hot CPU Tester and an Intel utility. No errors were detected.

Intel Core i7-2677M, CPU @1,80GHz
RAM: 4,00 GB
OS: Windows 7, x64
BIOS: UX31E.214
SSD: SanDisk U100,256GB

please run
Chkdsk /r
then sfc /scannow.

Are you using Virtualbox, this was reported as having insufficient memory resources

Hi Roy,

first of all thanks for your quick reply.

I have run the chkdsk and sfc /scannow (which warned me that some files were not repaired).

I attach you the report, hoping this is the right file (I have been reading a guide on the Microsoft website to generate it).

Is this of any help to fix my computer issues?

Hello Dario.

Please uninstall Avast Antivirus as it caused the BSOD. And replace it with MSE for now.

You can use this tool from Avast to uninstall it completely:

Those are the files its having a problem with.
note Additional language packs are not supported in W7 Pro, if you have any please uninstall them.

Actually torchwood if you look at the link below, it might be connected to the ASUS Webstorage App. Dario does have an ASUS laptop and if I'm not mistaken most ASUS laptops do come with preinstalled software.

Uhm, I don't know if I have additional language packs installed (at least, for sure nothing I have added intentionally), how can I check this and remove them?

Please uninstall Avast Antivirus as it caused the BSOD. And replace it with MSE for now.

Thank you Boris for this, I will remove Avast. I am curious though, I have been using Avast for years on my laptop, without any problems, is it common to have these conflicts appear out of nowhere? :huh:

Hi Roy, no idea about additional language packs. If I have them, it's not something I have added intentionally How can I check if I have some installed and remove them?

Moreover, I don't have the Asus Webstorage iutility mentioned in that link installed on my computer, although I have some Asus softwares pre-installed (from the Control Panel: WinFlash, Power4Gear Hybrid, ATK Package, Wireless Contole 3, Asus Live Update, Asus USB Charger Plus).

Well it might just have been a bad update that you got for Avast and that caused your computer to go bananas.

You wouldn't by any chance have a trial of Office 2010, would you?

If yes then uninstall that please!

Well, the computer came with a Trial of Office 2010 that gets re-installed after a new install of Windows, but I can activate it with a code I purchased back when I bought the laptop.
