Crashed Compaq Presario Hard Drive.Data Recovery Possible ???

Title explains it all I left my laptop on the coffee table,went outside to smoke and,when I came back in,the machine was just....."dead" Lots of stuff on there,I'd like to recover.What are my options ? The machine will not even boot

Are you sure no one used your computer when you went out?
If your drive isn't encrypted, you can remove the HDD from the laptop and attach it on a desktop or install it on a USB case.
Then you can transfer your files (\Users<name>)

Megaherts..yes...no one used my pc.And,THANK YOU VERY MUCH !!! Here's another question though...Can I install it on another external hard drive ?

Laptop HDD is 2.5" standard. You can buy a USB - HDD external case and put your HDD on it.
