Sudden shutdown - Now system has some corrupted files

Hello there,

I was playing a game (which I've played many times in the past with no issues) and suddenly my PC shutdown, it automatically restarted but upon loading into windows the resolution had changed to 800 x 600.

I tried to change the resolution but it's no longer possible to choose anything other than 800 x 600 as it's grayed out. So I checked Device Manager and saw there is a triangle with the "!" on several devices, including the graphics card and everything under "Other Devices"

Upon checking the properties for the graphics card it states "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)", I looked into this and tried the common fix of uninstalling the driver and scanning for hardware changes so the driver would be re-installed but upon system restart the same issue appeared again.

After this failed I went through several others posts and restarted the PC again, upon doing so windows repair said there was an issue. Once it was done it said there was a problem it couldn't correct and in the description (most of which I didn't understand) it said that some files were corrupt.

I found a post showing how to scan for (and fix) corrupt system files using the command prompt "sfc /scannow" and followed the steps.
It stated it found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them and that the deatils are included in the CBS.log file (also attached)View attachment 394686
ss 01.jpg

Unfortunately my knowledge is limited and I don't know how to proceed from here so any help or advice would be much appreciated indeed!

Thank you.

Hi Kaide80,

Well that log was totally uninformitive:confused:

can you run this, the output will be in the same place as the CBS, and labelled SURT.
can you post it please

Access Denied

Do you have a system restore point prior to this occuring, if so give it a try
BUT run the tool FIRST

Hello Roy and thank you for your fast response!

I downloaded the attachment and installed it, not 100% sure if I did something wrong as it seems to have produced two files (CheckSUR.log and CheckSURE.Persist.log) in the same location as the CBS file.

Either way Here they are: View attachment CheckSUR.log View attachment CheckSUR.persist.log

Also I had tried to do a system restore previously to my original post here but kept getting an error stating the restore had failed and that my antivirus program may be preventing the system restore from completing.

I did disable the antivirus suite but still got the same error and haven't attempted to try a system restore since.

If you need any further information please let me know.

Thank you for your time and help!

Kaide

Hi Kaide,

that 1 came back clean, so no help there either.

Can you got to Device manager
(controlPanel >> device manager .. click on view >> select show hidden devices
from the list that appears are there any with
either an ! a small black down arrow or any Unknown
if so can you if the roll back option is available use it, otherwise can you post the details.

As you have a custom build i take it you still have the discs.

Hello again Roy,

I went to Device manager as requested, the same items still appear with the "!" as when the problem first started, even clicking "View > Select hidden devices" didn't show anything new.

The ones with the "!" can be seen in the attached image here,
ss02.jpg

With regards to the disks, I may have some of them still, I've since emigrated and the PC is fairly old so not sure what disks I still have laying around, what ones may I need?

Also would it perhaps be a good idea/better to just do a new install?

Thanks again for your time it's much appreciated!

NAH I dont think we need to go that far yet

from that screenshot
You should have an Nvidia GUI on control panel, open it up >>Update option is available from there.

The lower down ones,
select each one
then RIGHT click >> properties >> details... then on the little dropdown arrow select hardware id's
I need the pci/ven details for them.

Apologies but I'm afraid I'm a little confused,

Do you mean the actual Nvidia control panel (the one I can normally access by right clicking on the desktop and clicking "NVIDIA control panel"?) If so, it seems that is no longer available since this issue started.

Or did you mean I should right click where is say's NVIDIA in the device manager as on the screen shot above and click update from there?

I had tried this earlier in the day and it did seem to update, but upon restarting the PC the resolution was still 800 x 600 and the "!" was still there on the device manager as in the screen shot above.

As for the other ones further down,

This is all of the ones listed with the "!" in device manager.

Hello Roy,

I installed the latest driver via the link you provided above and restarted as requested at the end of the install.
Unfortunately it didn't work, still have the same display issues (800 x 600) and the "!" is still showing in the device manager under Display Adapters > Nvidia GeForce GTX 660Ti as in the previous screen shot.

Is it possible it's to do with the corrupted windows files as mentioned in my first post?
I'm completely at a loss as to what's going on so really do appreciated your guidance!

Thank you,
Kaide

Hi Kaide,

The links below are for Intel & Asustek, they when installed will identify your equipement and advise on the drivers

https://downloadmirror.intel.com/24345/a08/Intel Driver Update Utility Installer.exe
https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&r...age=en&usg=AFQjCNGgS50fSq_PVUUxHTGFI6Tk0EWt0w

The unknown ROOT driver is from a VM (virtual machine).
the only way to get these is via thier tools option,, and is dependent on which version of VM you have installed. Cant tell you anymore dont use it myself.

The last item is for a TPI router/modem but i cannot identify it further.

Hello Megahertz07,

I've updated my specs a little but I don't know all the information as friend bought the parts and built the PC for me quite a few years back before I emigrated. If it's needed and you be so kind as to tell me a way to find out this information I'll be happy to do so.

With regards to your other questions,

"Did you installed the USB3 drivers for your MB?"
It's an old PC now, I'm pretty sure they are USB 2.0 and it's before USB3 was available.

"The unknown device probably is the chipset inf missing.
Did you installed the SATA drivers or IRST (intel)?"
I'm afraid I don't know what you mean as I'm not very knowledgeable on these matters.
It's a PC I've had for many years and it's been working fine until this problem happened, as mentioned before it was assembled by a friend a fair while back so I don't have this information.

Thanks,
Kaide

Hi Kaide,

Right lets try this Uninstall/reinstall Nvidea, follow the instructions below,

Please uninstall everything of Nvidia using Display Driver Uninstaller and install new drivers from Nvidia. Be sure the clean install box is checked and only install the Graphics driver and the PhysX driver, you can use this tutorial to do so :ar: NVIDIA Drivers - Avoid Problems
393977d1480260091-bsod-ntoskrnl-exe-only-occurs-when-computer-left-unattended-ss-2015-12-13-01.07.07-.png

If you dont have any USB3 ports/devices we can leave them be.

Have you been hit by malware recently?
I would like you to run
Malwarebytes free
note uncheck the trial option, and in the dashboard settings tick the rootkit option.

If you dont have any USB3 ports/devices we can leave them be.

Have you been hit by malware recently?
I would like you to run
Malwarebytes free
note uncheck the trial option, and in the dashboard settings tick the rootkit option.

Roy

Hello Roy,
I followed the tutorial and used the tool as you requested, I then installed the latest driver from Nvidia and it said it had installed correctly. I restarted after install but unfortunately the same problem still remains.

I downloaded Malwarebytes free as you recommended but it didn't find anything.

I don't want to get in the way of the good help you are recieving but this little free program will give you the needed information about your system hardware and more.

Speccy - Free Download - Piriform

I will go back to watching.

Jack

Thank you Jack!
I'll take a loot at that and update the info accordingly :)

Hi Kaide,
wish i had an old comp like yours:cry:.
Thats a really good rig.

MS has been throwing out some unusual driver updates lately, which have been causing graphics/Bios issues, have you downloaded any in the last couple of weeks?

ASUS Exclusive Features :
- MemOK!
- AI Suite II
- Ai Charger+
- Anti-Surge
- ASUS UEFI BIOS EZ Mode featuring friendly graphics user interface <<<<---------------
- USB 3.0 Boost
- Disk Unlocker

The above is from the spec sheet for that motherboard,
can you check the settings for arrowed please.

Did you run the other 2 identifiers/updaters from the links i provided earlier.
And we do need to update the USB3

Bios version should be 1110 and graphic 353.62
and lastly the latest utilites,
Description GPUTweak2 Ver1.4.0.8
1. Improve: Multiple card stability.
2. Fix: Monitor error when FanConnect enabled. File Size 34.85 MBytesupdate
according to Asus

note if you have fanconnect enabled change to dissabled, any change

If the problem still persists after the above, enter Bios hit the Reset to default option.
