Solved 4GB ram installed but only 1 gb usable ???

Mmm now the Dell has DDR2 and I am just wondering too that it might be better to have 1x4GB stick instead of the two?

Now the chipset in the machine is suppsedly able to run 64bit http://www.intel.com/Assets/PDF/datasheet/316273.pdf the CPU https://ark.intel.com/products/31728/Intel-Core2-Duo-Processor-T7250-2M-Cache-2_00-GHz-800-MHz-FSB also can support 64bit so I am guessing someone has installed a 32bit system on it as I find it hard to believe that the maker would have set it up with a 32bit system:confused:

Now do you have a sticker on the bottom of that machine with the OS on it? because it might be a 64bit on it and if you can still read the code then you could reinstall it with a 64bit system using a 64bit ISO.

icit2lol...I feel I should remind you that this system is a "Microsoft approved,re-furbished" PC (if that makes a difference). So,as far as what the sticker on the bottom says...would it really make a difference ? AND...this model seems to have be built before (Or,in) 2008 ! I don't think 64 bit was available then ??? I just checked and it doesn't say what the OS is.All it says is "Windows 7 starter for refurb PCs" :(

Now guitar mate I do not want to scare you but that Microsoft approved could mean literally anything to me and the sticker on the bottom should have the COA compliance code on it if the seller has installed Windows from a genuine source. It is easy to check that by running this Product Key Number for Windows 7 - Find and See this will give you examples of what those stickers look like and by agreeing with Microsoft to use their software it is stipulated in that agreement that the sticker has to be applied to the machine the OEM or retaill copy is being operated on.

Now the 64bit I am pretty sure it was available back then and has been for some time and I think in those links I sent the components you have do support 64bit which is the important factor because if they didn't the 64bit system just would not work properly if at all - but I stand to be corrected on that of course.

The Starter version you say you have is just that a starter it is very basic and will not have some of the features that Home or Home Premium would have - if my memory serves me right things like transparency is just not there and again I stand to be corrected. you can see what version you have and the bit version if you go to Control Panel > System you will see the bit version listed there see pic

64 bit systems certainly were available in 2008. Microsoft released 64 bit versions of XP and Server 2003 in April 2005.

Please read the following...I've made some comments within your comments.....

Icit2lol...I don't see the coa compliance code :( :( It looks to me like this is gonna be just TOO MUCH work ! I think I'll go ahead and install Xubuntu :P But...you said "(Now the 64bit I am pretty sure it was available back then (I agree...64 bit may have been available back the.BUT...it was in its beginning stages at that point) and has been for some time and I think in those links I sent the components you have do support 64bit which is the important factor because if they didn't the 64bit system just would not work properly if at all - but I stand to be corrected on that of course.

AND,I went to "control panel/system" and it says I am running a 32 bit system.

I will NOT dis-agree with you...BUT.....Was this Dell Latitude D630 built for 64 bit ? From what I've read,it was not.

Ok well I stand corrected on a few of the things you refer to and I shall leave this thread to the others as I don't have anything more than I have to add.
Good luck with what you attempting to do.
