Solved Why has my PC not needed Defrag in 6 years?

Hi,

My PC appears to be running slowly. I have asked on different threads and am taking advice at the moment.

One thing I periodically look at is Defragmenting the drives. But it always says that the drives are all 0% fragmented. I find this hard to believe, as I have owned the PC for six years and used it daily, and never defragmented because it always says 0%.

My XP PC needed defragmenting at least every 6 months. So is this a bug? I do backup everything every two weeks - to external hard drives. Is the backup process eliminating the need for defragmenting?

Win 7 defrags the HDD on a scheduled. On top of Disk Defragmenter window you'll see the schedule button.

Actually, win 7 doesn't always turn off defrag on SSDs. I recently installed four of them and they were still showing as scheduled until I manually turned it off.

Forgot to say that although there is a schedule it is set for 1am, and I always go to bed and turn off the PC before 12, so it never has chance to defrag. If I stayed up late I would know if it did, because it would slow the PC down and I would not be able to miss it.


PS: I don't have SSD drives, although I am thinking of getting some.

Mine is also set to 1 AM and at this time of the night / morning the computer is off.
Although, my SSD is 4% fragmented and my HDD is 0%.
If it missed the schedule, it will do ASAP.
Open task schedule %windir%\system32\taskschd.msc
Go to Microsoft - Windows - Defrag and click on Settings tab.
Second line = Run as soon as possible after a schedule start is missed

Oh ok thank you. It is set to every Wednesday at 1:30 and I can't guarantee it hasn't been left on when I went out. I thought I would see a pop up box because my security settings are set to ask me if I allow all apps to run. I guess Defrag is part of the system so it doesn't have one.

Don`t set a schedule to defrag your drives, turn it off and do it manually.
