1. Update your system specs. The link is in my signature.
2. Provide a lot more information. The little you've provided doesn't help troubleshoot your problem.

Hi and welcome to seven forums

Sanity I cant promise. Fixing your computer we can probably help.

I need some info. your win 7 dvd did you download it? from where? is it 64bit or 332bit?

What application did you use to burn the image?

More often than not failed installs can be traced to bad dvds or players

let us know

Ken

My appologies, i dont know why my edit did not make it in.. regardless.

typing this form different pc than install attempt so will give specs as close as i can get. OS = Win 7 64 Full Home Premium store bought, Asus P5Q turbo mobo, Core 2 Duo E8400, Nvidia 8800 GT 512, 4gig RAM, onboard audio (VIA), HD = ? atm,

bought all the HW about a year ago, ran XP woderfully, ran Win 7 RC 32 so wonderfully that i thought to take the jump into the full product and 64 at the same time to take advantage of the HW i recently bought.

Here is the situation
  • After any CLEAN (formatted fresh) install get Win Explorer has stopped working (any system attemps to restart fail). Often other windows services stop working (Media Player, Desktop
  • On many of the attempts to reinstall i get various failures at various times when applying the manufactures 64 bit drivers
  • On other attempts to let Win select the Drivers it wants I will get different errors that hang the system.
  • Win recoveries do not work
Have done about a dozen installs now trying various cobinations of Windows selected and vendor HW drivers to see what gives.. but nothing seems to work.

Any help is appreciated.

Have you removed all unnecessary hardware - all drives except the system drive, USB devices, sound cards, etc? Also, have you tried dropping down to 2GB RAM? Have you updated your BIOS to the latest version?

Clean fresh format is good !

Disconnect anything extra not needed for install ! USB stuff, printers, TV, extra monitor, Ext HD's, NO TV Tuner card installed.

Everybody thinks I'm Crazy but I have seen MORE first installs work with only 1 RAM stick, than with several sticks installed ! You can always add Ram later after it is up & running with out problems !

Kegobeer... specs are updated.. cheers!

I have stripped off all extra HW - other that what is listed in my current specs now - from the very start to get a good install beacuse i knew i needed to get all the 64 drivers added one at a time (i usually have 2nd monitor, printer, headphones on front jack and RAID morror set).

I did not do a bios update as you suggested, but will do that now..

Again, thanks for taking the time!

Make sure you also remove all but 2GB of RAM. If Windows 7 installs correctly, you can then shut down and install the other 2GB.

While im waiting on the current install to finish (with only 1 stick of ram =2gig) and with updated bios, i wanted to ask about the Asus win7 64 chipset drivers.

Whenever i tried to install these previously they would walk you thorough the intro screens then when it "installed" it IMMEDIATELY went to the installers package "successful" screen. When i closed out the installer, windows told me that it was not installed properly under the current configs...

If i selected the "use recomended and reinstall" it would repetatvively grind my HD but no action on the the screen what soever and the install process showed still running in taks manager (with an *32 beside it for a 64 bit driver package?!?!?!). If i selected "it installed properly" I would still get all the Windows Explorer errors,etc...

My question, is, should i be using the manufactures drivers or stick wiht the ones windows gets going in (there are no issues reported in Device manager)?

Did the message say it didn't install correctly, or did it ask if it installed correctly?

If your system is stable after you install Windows 7, and after the Windows Updates, I'd wait for a while before installing anything from Asus. See if applications work, drivers install, devices work, etc. If things seem ok, I wouldn't bother with any of the Asus drivers.

The installer package completed with a "successful" message, so correct as far as it was concernend. BUT win7 popped up with a message along the lines that it may not have installed correctly and gave me 2 options. Reinstall with recomended configurations OR "yes it did install correctly" if i recall.

I always tell Windows that it installed correctly. If things don't work down the line, then I uninstall and reinstall in compatibility mode.

Well the last attempt failed...

I did the Bios update successfully, brought system down to bare bones (video, 1 stick of 2Gig, key & mouse).

It got through the install but did not self-optimze the video display as it normally does. When installing the Nvida drivers and reboot, I get black screen with mouse but nothing else. Did not get win explorer crash as was seen before tho.

I dont get it. This system ran wonderfully for XP and Win7x32 RC but i just can seem to get it up on win7x64. I dont get any HW errors, just window type errors (this thing or another has stopped working) and no recovery will solve it on its own. Ill take one more attempt at an install and not touch any vendor drivers, just use what Win selects. If that fails then im gona call it a night and run at it tomorrow.

Well im back again and still with no luck...

Have dont a bare basics fresh install with latest bios as recomended by the fine posters in this thread. The "crashes" i get are different from time to time. Currently I have just the drivers as selected by Win7x64 and was able to get the machine up and running last night, even did some surfing before i packed it in for the night. So i get home tonight with the intention of checking for more info and now the pc wont load windows! Again!

I get the Starting Windows screen but the nice little flying graphic does not come up and the machine just sits there - no paging to the drive or anything. If i let it sit long enough it reboots itself... and goes to the Win error recovery screen. the Launch Startup Repair attempts to restore but resutls in the exact same situation.

I insist that i do not have defective hardware as this EXACT pc was running XP and Win7RCx32 just fine for months. As per previous posts in this thread, the few time i get the pc up and working i quicly get "Win Explorer Stoped Working" errors that wont go away ever and then need to reinstall... again and again and again.. you get the picture.

Im at the point that im seriously considering going back to XP for a year until Win7 gets its s*i* together - they cant blame the vendors or the drivers, cuz even using the WQHL drivers that Win loads up produce the same situation as any attempts where i have used the vendor supplied 64 drivers.

PLEASE any help!

I don't think you have defective hardware. I just think the drivers that Asus provided to Microsoft are complete crap. You aren't the only person that's had problems with an Asus board in Windows 7.

At this point, maybe you should reset your BIOS to default values. If you are running RAID, switch to IDE. Make sure everything is set to the default settings. Then, boot up Windows and see what happens. If things aren't working, try installing again.

Enoch, some questions if I may?
  1. Are you installing directly from the dvd?
  2. Is your flat panel connected via dvi? Or HDMI?
  3. You have prior issues installing the chipset updates from Assus?
  4. Is your hard drive connected via SATA?
  5. Does your bios read the hard drive as SATA?
Your issue suggests problems with your video card.
Check these points out and let us know.

Adrian
