M/S has rejiggered their ongoing support policy for Win7, and 8.1 on the Skylake platform.
The company originally announced that all Win7, and 8.1 support for both Skylake, and Kabylake would cease.
Then they bowed to the pressure of the big dollar buyers, and announced on their website, continuing support for a list of their commercially manufactured Skylake P/C's, till the end of life of the two O/S's.
My question to M/S and the Win-7 community in general is," Where does a homebuilt P/C fit in this scheme?"
I just finished a nice Skylake rig for my wife and installed my completely legal Win 7 O/S on it.
My disc is pretty old, so M/S happily upgraded the O/S installation to current, with a 7 hour thrash of 267 updates.
Now I am worried that they will pull the rug out, and leave me hanging.
Does any one in this community know if a home built Skylake rig will qualify for continuing support with a Win 7 O/S?

Hi, I am a systems builder here in Australia and my manager and I have just been hacking this same question as many of our customers still order Win 7.
To the best of our understanding anything below Win 10 (that is still supported) will still be updated till end of life, that includes OEM home builds.

Microsoft Response to Skylake Question

Hello Perth:
It is totally amazing that I got a response to my question from a source almost 10,000 miles away.
Anyway thanks for your supportive information regarding this subject.
I finally got a response from the M/S people that addressed my concern for the homebuilder.
I have attached a screen shot of their response for your perusal.
This answer was their response to the third time I asked the same question, holding their feet closer to the fire each time.
M/S can really take obfuscation to a new level.
Be Well
Art.

I have responded to Microsoft several time for several years, that bouncing from link to link and then to more hyper links does not answer my question.

They are slow learners or very lazy.

I don`t see why you`re getting so excited, my Z170 runs W7 perfectly and that`s all that matters to me, the less updates form Microsoft the better. All that should matter to you is your anti virus.

As long as you get security updates til 2020 what is your problem ?

The day MS stops bugging us with updates we will all have a celebration.

I want to use my PC, not be bothered by updates.

What do you mean pull the rug out ? What are you talking about ?

I could go out and buy a Kaby Lake and drop it in my board and not have 1 issue. All I have to do is update the Bios, but I have no intention of getting a Kaby Lake, there is no reason to.

Does any one in this community know if a home built Skylake rig will qualify for continuing support with a Win 7 O/S?

A custom built PC will get the same updates that a store bought W7 PC will get, there is no difference.

Stop worrying so much

You would in fact have 1 large issue - If you were to put a Kaby Lake CPU in your machine, that would be the end of your updates from MS right then and there. Even though they are allegedly supporting Win7 until 2020. They will not deliver updates to Kaby Lake machines. So sorry!

I don't think the OP is being unreasonable in wondering what might happen, given that MS has shown themselve to be quite capable of doing just about anything.
