I used to think Facebook was okay and used it regularly back in its early days.
I ditched it a few years ago when it turned into a 99.9% fake news site though. I have no use for it these days. The people I want to keep in touch with have my number, or other ways to contact me.

I have never been able to understand how Facebook gets away with collecting so much information about people. Especially people who don't even use the site. People now have been brought up to think this amount of obscene data collection is normal. Can't say I agree on that!

If you want to use their site and services then that's a different story - you know what you're signing up for. But they should never be allowed to collect huge amounts of data from people who aren't even using any of Facebook's services.

I have FB on one system, for contacts that I have that only seem to use FB to communicate, Those that actually use "LOL" and "SmilyFace" in Real face to face conversations , but I have removed / Blocked and basically nuked every bit of it everywhere else, especially on Phones and Tablets where it is added by default and wants to update every hour or so it appears - and it wants to manage all my phone calls, messages and pictures , If I wanted that sort of crap I'd have bought Apple Products :sarc:

I don't have the knowledge or money to do the research that was done in the article but for years I have told my friends the danger of Facebook and any other social media site. Of course they just think I'm old fashion and just don't understand.
Well I am old fashion but I understand. Their is a good chance that governments around the world tap into Facebook and gather all kinds of information.

People will put anything and everything on Facebook and think nothing about the
consequences .
Hell, I don't even open the door when someone knocks unless they are cops.

It's not the government tapping into facebook that's the real problem. it's the likelihood of Facebook having complete knowledge of the government Military and other secrets that this sort of data collection enables

If you have enough Innocent chatter between military personnel, you can deduce enough information to keep North Korea very happy for years

Does that mean we just give up, and surrender every iota of privacy? It's not all or nothing. Reducing your footprint is a wise thing to do. You don't put up a sign on your house that you are gone and won't be back for a month, do you? Why would you not do everything you can to protect yourself online?

If you are sensible you reduce your footprint, but we are talking about people who are not you or I they will have told everyone they know and a lot of people they don't know where they live, and they'll tell them where they are going on holidays and I would not be surprised if some of them posted a pic of the new alarm panel in set mode showing the code. And just in case a burgler is not sure that they've actually gone on holidays a long comes the selfie showing the florida hotel they're at

Hi Everyone, I have never been on Facebook, Twitter any of those sites, not my scene showing and telling

the world all about yourself. I know an old man who was so upset because his little grandchildren are on

Facebook, and they had posted all about his holiday house, his boat and many other things there, and the

poor old bloke was scared that someone was going to find out where the house was and break in. I really

Facebook is really dangerous, it's algorithms are engineered to learn as much as they can about you to formulate directing you to websites & news information that appeals to you that fits your past history on Facebook. This then allows manipulators of news to design fake news that will fit yours & many others ideas on hates & likes. With million of dollars & skilful use of information about you & the use of fake news it's not a big step to influence the way you might vote in an election.

You might think this is stretching things too far, but it has already been used in the Brexit referendum & the last US presidential election.

Things like Facebook are not a crime.
They don't make people join and post dumb things.
People do that on their own.
All people have to do is think a little. Thinking seem to be of short supply.
Facebook didn't start just to be friendly. It was designed to make money with peoples information.
Google or other search engines aren't free because the owners have big hearts. It's to make money with peoples information.
Now I don't mind any of them making money. The people that use these free services have to decide how much of their personal information they put online.

It's not just the internet. It's also gas station, mulls, Walmart ect.
Most people pay with credit cards. Now the company knows who you are, where you are at and the time. Plus what you bought. You can bet they sell that information.

People share their email address with everybody and then wounder what the get attacked through their email.

Think, think, and more thinking. Be a little paranoid. Maybe even a tin foil hat. Be careful what personal information you spread around. You can be sure the crooks are using such information.

I have no issue with that IF you're actually using their services. If you've signed up for it then fair enough. But, I don't see why people should have to give up all their information to a service they don't actually use.

Despite the arrogance of Facebook there ARE people out there who have no interest in using their products. This is exactly the reason why some countries are kicking up a fuss about the FB acquisition of WhatsApp. It makes people completely distrust their "end to end" encryption.

I CHOOSE to use an Android phone, therefore I accept that my data will be shared with Google, despite how much I disagree with it. The other options weren't really on the table for me (Apple products are too expensive, Windows phone is basically non-existent and I don't want to go back to my Nokia 5110, even though the batteries then were much better ).
At the same time, I choose not to use any Facebook products now, so I would expect not to have my data collected by them.

And Facebook shouldn't be allowed to keep user data after an account has been closed and removed. Why should they be making money off people who aren't using their services?

If somebody comes up to me in the street and asks me to fill out a form for their marketing purposes, my reply is always: "How much are you going to pay me?". They soon walk away then!

Luckily, even when I did use Facebook I never posted anything personal on it. My account was pretty locked down as I had no intention of sharing everything with the whole world. Most of the stuff I posted was just jokes. I used it to keep in touch with a few people, but then I thought to myself, they can contact me other ways. If they're incapable of doing that, they're not exactly worth keeping around anyway. The rest of the (un)social networks I've never been interested in.

How many websites can you sign up with, without an email address?

Even SevenForums, EightForums and TenForums demand an email address.

In 2013 as part of my TAFE Web Design course, I was forced to sign up with Google, so that we could use their junk SEO serivces.
They demanded a mobile phone number!
I can't remember how those of us without mobile phones bypassed that requirement.

If you or I did, what Facebook and Google do (millions of times per second, no less) we'd be rotting in prison at the taxpayer's expense.

IMO, Facebook and Google are no different to the "Legitimate Businessmen" who also use your IP to make massive profits and they should all be treated exactly the same way.

My bad, they are different, Facebook and Google are protected by politicians and fanboys.
