The local electronic "fix-it" shop had a refurb for sale for $425. It's practically an antique by computer standards. How do they have the chutzpah to charge that for a system with a 2 GHz CPU and 3 GB RAM?

You can get one 4 times better for the same price at a "big box" store.

I bought an XP refurb a few years ago from MicroCenter for $150. Probably a Win 7 would be about the same now, but with better CPU and RAM.

You have to factor in the price that Windows 7 itself is commanding due to its rarity and the fact that some people are prepared to pay silly money for it. When component prices (the OS is a component), are between $150-$200, (OEM), you are not going to pay less than 200% of that for a system.

Of course if the device is loaded with a re-usable retail copy of the OS then all bets are off, $425 would be a good price for the OS alone, (to some users, who would scrap the hardware to reuse the OS licence)

The first thing that comes to my mind is, why would a computer fix-it shop have Windows 7 Ultimate/64 installed on such a low performance computer. A computer shop surly know the value of a legal Ultimate/64, OEM or Retail.

If it was me I would check to make sure it was a legal install of Windows 7.

I got the impression the refurb he was talking about wasn't his rig since he stated that one can get one much better elsewhere for the same price, suggesting he didn't buy the refurb.
