Am on a serious budget an bought a second hand PC. It was working on display. Has Win7 Ultimate, no Service Packs. Browser ie8. At home I put my Edimax radio into a USB port and was on the internet with my landlords xfinity wifi. Then it appears that after Windows began to auto update, the connection became slower and now will wink on for a few seconds and then gone. Using my mobile phone as a hotspot the connection is strong and stable. But very slow. For example I thought of trying Firefox browser but gave up on the download after only about a sixth was shown on the progress bar in 30 min. The computer is showing occasional messages to install SP 1. I am going to try downloading it on another computer and transferring the installation package via USB stick. However if the computer needs to be online this will be useless.

The hardware is in excellent condition and I think all that is needed is correct software and drivers. Any suggestions on how to get things up and running properly will be appreciated. Thank you.

This forum ain't what it used to be!

The response by samuria was a virus link. Hey samuria. You missed- I am laughing at you.

I just do not get this. After installing all possible updates the wifi is great with my mobile phone hotspot but cannot utilize my landlord's xfinity wifi which works fine with other devices.

Suggestions for backups are not necessary thank you- The computer has nothing of mine on it except a couple of drivers.

Sorry if I have used the wrong technique to answer responses. The correct way to do this is a mystry.

Thanks again.

Hi Ned,

Its not a virus link just your AV getting over zealous.

But i suspect its more to do with were your living
was on the internet with my landlords xfinity wifi

Your on a shared network router,
The bandwidth, ie how much data space you can have, the more users on-line the less you have.
= slower downloading

Thanks Roy. So why is there no problem using the XFINITY with my smart phone and notebook? Could my Edimax radio need some settings tweaking?

Try downloading and installing a new driver for your Edimax radio.

Also, try a new wifi adapter. You can get one cheap at Walmart if you are in the US.

My apologies. Caution can also be self defeating.

Thanks for the input. It turns out I was given a key with a character that was in incorrectly transcribed. It puzzles me that all was well for about the first 45mins that I used it.
