Hi..

I've been having some BSODs for a little while now and I'm having problems pinpointing the exact cause.

They sometimes occur on boot and other times when watching video files that are stored on my computer and other times, seemingly randomly.

I was running quite an old version of ESET as well as GPU drivers but I've updated both of those to the latest available but the BSODs have persisted.

I do occasionally get controller errors in the event log but I've run Seagate test tools on the hard drives and they check out ok, although I haven't as yet run the longest tests.

I haven't checked the RAM as yet either.

I can perhaps leave the computer on through the night to perform the long hdd check and memtest86, but in the meantime, I would be grateful if someone could look through my logs and suggest anything else that could be causing the crashes please?

If you need more info, please let me know.

Thanks very much.

Hello Nick mate this wininit is a normal part of Windows however it has also been associated with malware so do these please

I am assuming you have already run a full scan with Eset?? if not then do so.

I think the memtest is a good idea the hard drive can wait and you need not run the long one anyway so please follow this

MEMTEST
Nowto make absolutely we are on the same page the memtest linked here istheonly onewe recommend andit MUST be run for at least 8 passes oryou may as well not bother. It is rather lengthy and best left for adowntime for that machine - overnight is good. Having said that youcan stop the test if errors show up while you are around and then itis a matter of tracking down the bad stick of RAM. Thanks for the reply ICIT2LOL.

I have scanned with Eset and Malwarebytes and no infections were found.

I think I may have made some progress though. Decided to run the long tests with Seagate DOS tools. The OS hard disk passed, but there was a problem with the 3tb disk. It didn't fail as such but the system froze during scanning so I'm thinking that the cable may be faulty and it dropped the connection. Currently scanning my 2tb disk and if that passes, I'll swap out the cable for the 3tb disk and see how that goes.

Thanks again for the reply and I'll keep you posted.

Scan completed successfully. 10 hours+ well spent ;)

Will run memtest86 through the night for added peace of mind.

If the RAM checks out as ok and any issues come back, I will try alternative SATA ports and brand new cables for all disks.

Also, it may possibly help if I give it a strip down and clean. I try to keep on top of things with everyday dust that builds up on fan vents and easy to reach places inside, but it has been a couple of years since I cleaned it properly and reapplied thermal paste etc.

Ok Nick if the drives come u ok then the memtest is next because I notice it is DDR 2 which means it is reasonably ole though I have an older machine with DDR2 I keep for testing software but all the same still worth a shot. It is lengthy but the fact you only have 4GB in the machine means it will not be as lengthy as say a machine with 16GB RAM on board.

So I have just found the manual for that board mate ASUS P5K-E WIFI-AP USER MANUAL Pdf Download. and it can support up to 8GB RAM and if the memory does come up with errors then this might be a good opportunity to make your machine better by taking it to the max RAM and say installing 2x4GB sticks and in the pic I have showed you the slots to install the two into first you could have 4x2GB sticks but either way you will have access to two channels of RAM unless of course you are using 2x2GB sticks already. In that case I would be very inclined to add 2 more sticks of 2GB an that way it frees up the data transfer rates between the CPU and the RAM. DDR2 is not usually that expensive and I would be doing it simply because of the advantages of more RAM. The thing you must remember is any sticks you add MUST have the same timings as the sticks already installed and if you are installing four sticks then the same rue applies because different timings will sometime s make for problems.
If all this does not make sense then please ask we can put you on the right direction to go.

The board itself is quite a decent one form the specs I have seen so hopefully it is ok because that would e the worst case scenario to have it go bad .

Thanks for the advice.

Will be running memtest86 through the night.

I'd really like to be able to build/buy something a bit better, but I've not long bought a new bike so there's no chance of me being allowed to do that :D Upgrading RAM may well be possible though.

The website specs for the board state:
*The chipset officially supports the memory frequency up to DDR2 800MHz. Tuned by ASUS Super Memspeed Technology, this motherboard natively supports up to DDR2 1066MHz

With that in mind, 2x4GB of DDR2 1066MHz seems like the best way to go? Would that only work with overclocking the RAM?

Doesn't help if your running a NON-Genuine install.

You have an Acer product key on an Asus Retail motherboard.

As this forum does not support piracy no further help will be provided until you install a genuine system.
Troubleshooting a non-genuine install is pointless as we have no known base to work from
