It looks like this is a fairly common issue, but I can't seem to figure out what the solution is, or if there is a solution.

Yesterday (10/25/09), I installed Win 7 Home Premium on my wife's Gateway MX8739 Notebook (Pentium Dual-Core, 1.6GHz, 1GB RAM). It has a built-in SD card reader, which always worked fine under Vista. Vista came pre-installed on the machine when we got it 18 months ago or so. Under the new Win 7 installation, the SD slot doesn't seem to be recognized. There's nothing wrong with the card itself--it works fine in her camera.

I tried the O2 Flash Memory Card Driver 3 that was mentioned in another thread with no affect. Has anyone had this problem and successfully fixed it?

Go to the gateway web-sit. Go t the driver download section. Enter your serial # off the sticker on your laptop. Tell it what version of windows you are running. It will then display all the drivers for your laptop. Find the driver for your card reader and download it to your desktop. After DL is finished click on the icon to begin instalation.

You should be fine after that.

I tried this and it didn't work. I put the card in and it won't show up under "My Computer".

Well...I just bought a Gateway laptop (model NV5207) with W7 loaded on it. so far all it's good for is playing games. The first thing I wanted to do was set the clock to the right time. Tried to open the control panel. *nothing*. Tried to use the SD reader... *nothing*. I haven't tried the CD/DVD drive yet..but I'm afraid there will be nothing there either. If there isn't ..I'm taking this thing back to the store. (sorry..just had to rant)

I did go to the Gateway site already. It's fairly lame. They don't even have Windows 7 listed as a specific option for the OS. Of course, I know that Windows 7 is supposedly close enough to Vista that most of the drivers should work, but then why did the card reader stop working in the first place?

I'll re-download the media card reader drivers and give it a shot, but I'm not expecting much.

Well, I have almost similar problem. When I insert sd into reader it asks me to format card. i have tried many different cards. Still dont know how to fix that problem. Smart card reader worked well with my first Vista install which installed in store. After format it doesn´t work.

I also have the same problem with windows 7. I have a Sony vaio laptop model VGN-FZ190 and once I installed windows 7 my built in sd card read and my external sc card reader stop working. the external reader is a epraizer UP-850 62 in 1 SIM Card Reader.
But I will say I was very impressed with windows 7. I never had to install any Sony drivers , windows 7 installed all the drivers and everything worked except my sd card reader and my built in web cam. Much better than all other version of windows.

fat or no fat

Most SD Cards are pre-formatted with the old ‘Fat’ format system.
I kept getting the 'old format before use' error at work when trying read SD Card on Laptop running only Win7, however later at home on dual XP/Win7 the SD Card was read without any problems. I’m not sure but is Win7 – Fat compatible?

Windows 7 has it listed as a ehome infrared receiver (USBCIR) and the device status listed is (this device cannot start (code 10)
Any suggestion?

Fireware out date?

SD-card read error -

after further testing on 3 sd-card readers, 2 of which are less than 2 years old the other removed from an ancient 'Time' PC idicates it's age. Within Win7 the first 2[newish] both read data and media, the old unit only reads media.
My thoughts here are moving towards out of firmware.
I did a quick scan a cross the net and came across firmware updates for various 'Card-readers'
As firmware in both the newish cards are up to date, and I'm unable to locate combatible Fireware updates for 'Time' unit, its a situation that I can not confirm or test.
If failed to read media from SD_Card, then try read it as a 'Portable device' [Rmouse menu]

There is an option to run software - incompatible mode, but not for system drivers or at the point of access to data [HD/usb......].

A quick look on the Sony support site has on covered updates for Win7 including driver update for the 'data card reader'
