I erased my password through the control panel in XP mode in hopes of not ever having to enter the password. Now when I try to log-on, I get this message:

Old password:
The system cound not log you on. Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type your password again. Letters in passwords must be typed using the correct case.

No Password:
Unable to log you on because of an account restriction.

I tried deleted the credentials but still can't log-in whether my password is blank or the old one. Is there anything I can do?

I tried a system restore with no luck. I have to uninstall XP mode and reinstall all my programs again. A kind reminder to anyone wanting to erase the password through the WinXP mode control panel...

Same as mine, but it didnt make me go an do what u did, i do not think there is anything u can do. You could try and connect to Xp's Computer Management from W7, where u can enable the Guest account or even create a new account. I tried this, it connects but get access denied (5) once going into Users...so i gave up.

There was absolutely nothing I could have done so I just uninstalled and reinstalled everything. Once you erase the password through XP mode control panel, it just won't let you log in no matter what.

Yeah. There are plenty of utilities to reset the password to anything you want or to blank it.

Here's good one.

Offline NT Password & Registry Editor Review - Password Recovery Software Review - Password Crack ISO Download

If you don't want to enter your password in the future, that's what netplwiz is for on Vista/7 and Userpasswords2 for XP. Type it in start menu search box.

Hi there
He's not trying to recover a LOST password -- he's already deleted it.

His system won't allow him to create a new one - it needs a password which he has deleted.
There could be something in the (XP) registry that requires a password - if this is true then I'm afraid its too late at this stage to do anything with the XP system.

I think you'd be better off uninstalling XP mode completely and re-installing it again.

Failing that why not attempt to restore your HOST system back to an earlier point in time (before you erased the password). The XP mode should then have your old password in it. (So long as you also restore your VHD disk).

You DO take regular backups don't you.:cry:

Cheers

XP Mode does not allow user accounts without passwords. It also does not allow limited user accounts without joining them to the Remote Desktop Users group.

Simply, you must use a password in XP mode. Your only solution is to reinstall XP mode.

Took me a few hours, but I uninstalled XP mode and re-installed it along with all the XP programs.

It's funny how Microsoft engineers didn't think that there would be some dumb people like me that erase the password through XP mode control panel. Then once you shut down XP mode, Virtual PC doesn't know that you changed the password from within and you get stuck...lol

Xp mode or the Virtual XP that comes with Xp Mode. What if i used my previously created VHD of my existing Xp and mount that as a VM?

Hi there

decent backup would have saved you a LOT of time

Restore HOST W7 system -- 15 Mins
Restore XP VHD disk --- 8 Mins

Total around 23 - 30 mins max.

I know it's a bit late now but hopefully the experience has shown that you should always have a recent backup -doesn't matter how samll or trivial the system change appears to be.

(If you are reading this why not backup your system NOW). :D

Term XP mode means the Microsoft's downloadable Virtual XP Mode. XP mode and Virtual XP refer to this, they are the same. XP mode a.k.a. Virtual XP needs a password. The issue like OP described doesn't occur if you create an other user account in XP mode for your normal use and let the default admistrator account XPMUser intact. That way you can always login to XP mode using this built-in account.

If you install or mount XP or any other Windows OS to a Virtual PC virtual machine you don't have to use a password though it is always recommended.
