Was handed a dead Vista laptop which kept booting into the Windows Recovery enviroment and a blue screen (not BSOD)

After waiting a long time the Recovery Enviroment (on a partition on the HDD no discs required) started so ran Startup Repair 3x

After which Windows Vista appears to boot but then shows the Error message dialog "LogonUI.exe failed to start because imagehlp.dll was not found. Reinstalling this application might fix the problem"

Tried Safe Mode and its other varations. (Greeted with a black screen with a moving mouse cursor thats it)

Booted back into the Windows Recovery Enviroment and tried Command Prompt with the hope of running SFC /ScanNow. Greeted with the message:

"There is a System Repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."

Of course when you restart sfc never happens and we are back to booting Windows and the LoginUI Error message described above.. Booting back into Windows Recovery and the Command Prompt gives me the same

"There is a System Repair pending which requires a reboot to complete. Restart Windows and run sfc again."

Thanks for help in advanced

Do you have a Vista Home Premium installation DVD. If so load that & find Start up Repair & run that. It seems you have a start up problem that needs to be repaired. Once you get it to start you should then be able to run SFC/ScanNow.

Follow this Forum Tutorial on how to do a Start up Repair. It is for Windows 7 but it should also be applicable to Vista as Windows 7 is based on Vista.

No Vista DVD just a recovery partition. Would a Windows 7 disc work (been much the same underneath)

StartUp Repair on the Recovery Partition finds no errors. Would a DVD find different??

All the links seem to hae ethier saying the links are no longer available or i'm not looking at the right ones. Etheir way i think a sensible option would now be to scrap Vista (its out of support after all) and stick 7 onto the Laptop. Thanks Roy
