So having recently installed my new 5870 video card  I was quite eager to start running some bench tests and checking out the results.

Initially I booted up Crysis Warhead and Flight Simulator X for a quick run and immediately noticed a drastic improvement with this card. Crysis was on FULL settings and didn't even flinch during gameplay.

Windows WEI improved from 7.4's to 7.8's on graphics (previous card was nvidia Evga 9800 GX2)

3d Mark Vantage on the other hand has got me stumped. My numbers are WAY lower than expected as they are showing way lower than with my 9800 GX2?! Also, the CPU score is coming up as one third of what I was getting before and I haven't made any changes to my CPU!

I suspect that this is a software problem with 3d mark, since everything else showed signs of improvement but can't understand where the issue lies.

I am running Windows 7 x64 & ATI 9.10 Drivers for 7 x64

Attached are screenshots from vantage after tests before with my old card and now with the 5870. The attached GPUZ shot on it's own is of my current config as well.

PS - the total score of my before pic shows '0' by accident, I believe I reset it at the time by mistake but the individual scores beneath are still valid.

I suspect it's the drivers. My 4890's score 1000 points lower with 9.10 compared to 9.9

CAT 9.9:

CAT 9.10:

Vantage 9.10 PF 930 1015 3.86ghz 7RTM.JPG

As for your CPU score, you are now using an ATI card which means - NO PhysX support. So no more artificially inflated CPU score ;)

Ok thanks for the reply.

Just so I understand this more clearly.

PhysX with my nvidia card causes artificial CPU scores? Was I actually getting MORE out of my CPU with PhysX vs an ATI card or are you saying it's kind of like smoke and mirrors.

Also, regarding the numbers with my 5870, even if it is the drivers, shouldn't I still be way higher in my numbers, your numbers are in the 18-19's and mine aren't even close with the 5870.

Does any of this mean I am losing performance when gaming? Cuz as I stated, it would appear that games are running much better but I could be blind optimist!

Game are runing faster with your 5xxx card.
And like you stated, basically smoke and mirrors on an Nvidia card with that benchmark.

Well, after a fresh format and install of Win7 and the ATI drivers, my numbers have increased substantially. Wonder what could've been causing the issue. Still though, I expected higher than that, shouldn't my numbers be more aligned with yours 'smarteyball'?

Those CPU test components use PhysX to augment performance. Basically it took the load of the CPU and let the GPU take a lot of the slack, hence the much higher scores.

Vantage has always been 'favorable' to nvidia.

Still though, I expected higher than that, shouldn't my numbers be more aligned with yours 'smarteyball'?

You have to consider that I'm crossfiring two 4890's. In a single GPU test the 5870 outclasses the 4890 easily:

Your games feel faster and smoother because they are :)

GPU-Z 0.35 and the latest 0.36 added support for your card, plus it shows your card as DX 10 there.

lol, if you read above, you'll see I did THE EXACT same thing with 'smarteyball'!

So far I like this card, but this BIG MOUSE issue is driving me nuts, if you haven't heard about it, I started another thread and there is quite a bit that can be googled on it but no real fix yet.

At random, since installing my 5870 with ATI CCC 9.10 x64, the mouse cursor just goes HUGE on me. No way to change it back via any settings, only by rebooting. Becoming a real nuisance and big embarrassment on ATI's part.

Yeah I saw that. I saw your first few lines about your 5870 ATI card, and just assumed the screenshots were about it, not the nvidia card. But your two apps were older versions though. :p

I have a 5770, not seeing any weird mouse pointer issues.

I have a 5770, not seeing any weird mouse pointer issues.

read this:

AMD Game Forums - 9.10 5870, CURSOR ISSUE NOT FIXED.

I didn't know there was an HD video playback problem also related to the mouse issue, so I tried firing up an HD video and voila, my computer went ape $hit as well. I only have a couple days left to return and compared to Nvidia, the software side of ATI seems to be scaring me away now.

Just keep in mind that this is new tech and it will undoubtedly take a few revisions to sort a lot of niggling issues out.

On the other hand, welcome to the world of Catalyst drivers

Hmm,

Still don't have any of that. I saw one guy on there mentioned he had the issue with his 5770 though. I watched some 1080p HD video clips, full screen and not, was just fine.

I am using the drivers for 5770 and not specifically 9.10, which these for 5770 are a little later drivers than the 9.10. 9.10 are 8.66.1, these are 8.66.6.

You might try them if you were so inclined, but who knows if it might clear the problem or not. Might not.

drivers for 5800's 5700's which are 8.66.6

There are also some beta developer drivers, beta 9.11 too. These aren't direct from AMD but..

IMO, NVidia's no perfect angel either. Each has their own problems, that are fixed with passing time.

Yep. With the amount of dodgy drivers they have been relasing lately, the "Nvidia drivers rock while ATI drivers suck" argument is now largely a moot point.

The story continues.....

I found a beta driver ATI 9.11 (driver 8.67) and no changes. Performance is still good, but the mouse still gets fat on it's own AND I still have the video problem.

The video crash also just happened while watching a youtube video in FULLSCREEN HD mode. After more googling and reading it seems there are several with this problem and both may be linked.

It has to do with either fullscreen HD movies or fullscreen streaming movies, believe it or not.

No issues when gaming in fullscreen, just movies.

I like the performance, just don't like the dodginess thus far.

Flash Fullscreen Crash - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

On that forum, someone states they fixed it by changing some 'hardware acceptation' setting but he/she doesn't elaborate. Anyone know if this is Catalyst or Java related?

PS - 'Airbot' your link for the 9.11 drivers above still goes to 9.10, might want to fix that.
