Ok, I got another computer that has W10 upgraded from 8. I removed the 500 GB drive from the old computer and will use it as the C: drive to the new one. I cloned a 80 gb I had for back ups through a usb case. I damaged the boot 0f the 500 gb and repaired it using a repair cd. I have my own copy of W7 home premium and tried to repair it with that and it said not the right version for some reason. Anyway I want to leave the activation code with the 80 gb as I installed the 80 GB in the old computer a it works fine online and downloaded updates. I would like to purchase my own code for the 500 gb drive that I am using in the new computer. It gives an option to change codes in the sys. properties. How do I find the right code needed to have my own activation for the new computer. Am I making myself clear in what I;m asking for ? I'm an older gent and not always computer literate. Thanks. GBY

Hi GBY,

it depends on what type of W7 licence you have if its Retail then you DO NOT have a problem
System builder is a little more problematic, straight OEM then unfortunately its time to buy a new licence.

Roy, thanks for getting back. The W7 home premium disk I have is retail from a computer I sold over a year ago. Is there anyway to find out what the license is by by searching in the W7 files ?

Hi GBY,

Belarc will provide with the full code - DO NOT POST it, and any other keys/passwords on a WORKING system
Belarc - System Management For The Internet Age. Software license management, IT asset management, IT security, Cyber Security.

Retail discs come in a package with the COA (activation key) sticker attached, still got it??
You stated you sold the computer on - if you sold it as a working Activated machine then the purchaser is using that key - IT CANNOT be used on 2 computers at the same time.

I have belarc and know the full code. I don't even know the code for the older/sold computer but still have the retail disk. I understand the not using two codes, that is why I want to get my own code for using the 500gb W7 drive in my new computer and sell the old one with the code that it came with. I just cloned the drive on an 80 gb I had. Does belarc tell if it was retail or upgrade version. I don't now if it was upgraded from Vista or washed and had a fresh install. The code sticker on the one I'm selling says windows vista business.

Hi Hiskid1973

According to the specs from HP that comp was only shipped with XP/Vista with a PRO version, confirmed by your comment re COA sticker.

As i said before the product key in use is for a Volume MAK Licence -
WHICH IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR RESALE.

Allthough MS recognises it as genuine, if you purchased it in Official looking packaging then i can tell you its non-genuine, these keys are ONLY sold in bulk to Companies and Educational establishments and passed on to Employees/Students.

There are some other odd entries on the report
Retail installs do not require a SLIC table or a W7 marker code BOTH are present on yours
Somebody has added them thinking they are required

As i said MS recognises it as Genuine, basically as long as it ticks all the right boxes thier happy
MS activation servers follow rules but i can take a bigger overview, hence my above comments

I would advise you not to sell that comp on using that key - As if/when the buyer encounters an activation problem YOU will be liable, unless you can provide paperwork from the Original company or Educational establishment.

What do you recommend would be the least cost alternative, buy 1 or 2 keys. Which key to buy. I have the original 500 gb. drive in my new dc8300 and the cloned 80 gb. in the old dc7900 to sell. As your recommend I'll get a new key before selling. Which type of key should I buy ? I'm only asking $50 for the 7900. Should I just sell it with a fresh W7 Home premium install that is not activated ? What about the original 500 gb drive that is now installed in the dc8300, what about that key ? Thanks for your help. GBY
