I noticed this on a brand new installation after all updates were applied.
I have never seen this on any Windows machine, ever.

I create a folder named "folder.anything" and Explorer displays "folder".
Rename it "folder.anything.more" and Explorer displays "folder.anything".
Explorer refuses to display the final extension.
The extension is there, it shows as "D:\folder.anything.more" if you click in the address bar.
This happens to folders on any drive, local or network, in the root, or any folder deeper.
The "Folder Options - View - Hide extensions for Known file types" selection works correctly for filename extensions. I can hide 'em or show 'em.
The Folder Options - View - Hide extensions for Known file types" has never had any effect on foldername extensions on any Windows that I have ever seen, including this one.

Although, this is the first windows I have ever seen that strips the final extension of folder names as described.

Please help.
Thank You

Attaching .more doesn't make it an extension. A true extension says that the file is coded in a particular way and can be read by a particular program. And folders never have extensions, only files.

Attaching .more doesn't make it an extension. A true extension says that the file is coded in a particular way and can be read by a particular program. And folders never have extensions, only files.

This is simply wrong. There is no thing as a "true extension". Moreover, filename extensions have nothing to do with the file contents or any program, any file can have any name while its contents remain the same, and (properly written) software reads it the same no matter what.

In fact, there is no such thing as an extension, Windows doesn't cares about it and it's just a leftover convention from the DOS days. Windows only knows a file name, and it includes everything, including any trailing ".anything". And since folders follow the same naming rules as files, they can be named in the very same way, and treated as such: as something irrelevant.
Windows Explorer, however, gives some value to "the last part after the last dot" of the filename, it uses for its file associations to select default programs.

The fixit won't run on WHS 2011.
WHS 2011 is based on Server 2008 R2 which is based on the Windows 7 code.

I have no issue with file names. There is no error with file names.
My issue is with "FOLDER" names only.
Call it an extension or whatever, makes no difference.

Explorer will not show the last period and any text that may follow, on any "FOLDER" name.
Again, there is no issue with file names, ONLY folder names.

Thank You

What about trying to restore the default Explorer file associations?
In particular, you may need to restore both folder and directory entries.
At some point, for some reason, those may have became broken or a parameter could have been added there to hide the extensions for folders specifically.

Thank you gentlemen.

My primary aim was to replace my smoke producing WHS 2007 OEM hardware.
Of course, the Microsoft "OEM" moniker means that one must buy a new version of windows when the existing motherboard dies.
So, since I needed new hardware, and Microsoft will not permit moving the original WHS 2007 to a new motherboard, I had to start over with WHS 2011.
I have the perfectly preserved hard drives from the original server but I can never use them because Microsoft will not permit WHS 2007 to start a new motherboard.

My requirement was to replace my dead backup server.
Along the way I discovered this weird Explorer folder behavior.
I am sorry to say that due to other complications inherent in the installation of WHS2011, I had to trash the offending WHS 2011 installation and start over from scratch for like the fifth time before I got everything right.
Now, I no longer have the issue, although I think Alehandro might have been on the right track with his "restore both folder and directory entries" advice.

Thank you for all your help.
