May 8, 2018 - KB4103712 (Security-only update)

Applies to: Windows 7 Service Pack 1Windows Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 1

Improvements and fixes

This security update includes quality improvements. No new operating system features are being introduced in this update. Key changes include:

  • Addresses an issue that may cause a memory leak on SMB servers after installing KB4056897 or any other recent monthly update. This leak may occur when the requested path traverses a symbolic link, a mount point, or a directory junction and the registry key is set to 1: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\LanManServer\Parameters\EnableEcp
  • Addresses an issue that may cause an error when connecting to a Remote Desktop server. For more information, see CredSSP updates for CVE-2018-0886.
  • Security updates to Internet Explorer, Windows apps, Windows kernel, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows storage and filesystems, HTML help, and Windows Hyper-V.
For more information about the resolved security vulnerabilities, see the Security Update Guide.

Known issues in this update

Symptom
A stop error occurs on computers that don't support Streaming Single Instructions Multiple Data (SIMD) Extensions 2 (SSE2).

Workaround
Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

Symptom
Microsoft is aware that some customers have reported that network drivers are intentionally uninstalled, then fail to reinstall after applying the May 8, 2018 update. This can result in the loss of network connectivity.

Workaround
Microsoft is presently investigating and will provide a status update when the investigation is complete.

How to get this update

This update is now available for installation through WSUS. To get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.

I think this update possibly screwed up the wireless card on one of my older systems, couldn't get it to work no matter what I did. Haven't made any other changes to the system or any config changes, or installed any new software.

Tried uninstalling/reinstalling the card drivers, removing and reinstalling the card, troubleshooting, system restore, AV scans, removing the update.
I was beginning to think the card had gone kaput, but restored from a System Image 2 days and Hey Presto - normal service resumed! Will have to skip this update on that system for now.

Can't really see what else could have caused it other than this update. Anyone else had any connection issues since installing?

I thought that IE updates were not included in the Security-Only updates.

Is MS now including security updates for all software (apart from .NET & Office)?

I thought that IE updates were not included in the Security-Only updates.

Is MS now including security updates for all software (apart from .NET & Office)?

No, the IE Security updates aren't included, it's just another of Microsoft's badly worded articles. Every months Security-only articles has stated they include the IE updates, but they don't. They just haven't changed the generic description in the Security-only articles since they began to separate them.

I've stated before that MS should really change that, as it's misleading and could cause people to miss important IE Security updates. Because if you choose to go down the Security-only update route (Group B) then the IE cumulative updates don't show up in Windows Update.

You are correct, this Update is not included in the Monthly Update, which is strange to say the least, as it shows up as an Important Update after installation.

I downloaded & installed it this morning. No problems at all & it required a restart.

Since April Security only update (kb4093108) I began to have problems with my WiFi. After installing May Security only update (kb4103712) I just was unable to connect to the internet or to the router settings (via IP), using wireless or cable, and on Network and Sharing Center it was OK.
After uninstalling both everything came back to normal.

I tried everything, but just couldn't get mine working again. In the end I just had to restore from an earlier System Image. Luckily I'd made one only 2 days before. This update will stay on my skip list, until MS pushes out a fix for it.

Another great update from MS! This year is turning into great fun with these updates!

This is just another reason supporting my decision to stop installing MS updates after January 2018. I'm so fed up with MS!
A few weeks ago, I re-imaged my PC using my December 2017 MR Backup Image (i.e. prior to January's updates).

I think that I'm going to have to rely on Backup Images from now on, rather than risk installing MS' dodgy updates.

As you have probably seen from my advice to people who are reinstalling the OS, I only advise them to include updates to and including December 2017.

It is a real shame that MS can't realise that there are going to be people that will still continue using Windows 7, for whatever reasons they may have. It could be that they are happy and confident with Windows 7, it could be for financial reasons where they cant afford to upgrade their hardware to 64-bit, or for any other number of reasons!

If MS could only release a final updated ISO that includes all the OS updates and fixes rather than leaving upto the users having to do this on a monthly basis especially after a clean install (and there are different degrees of users knowledge when it comes to computers), which as we have certainly seen this year, causes system crashes and abnormal behaviour, ultimately ending up in perhaps another clean install. The updated ISO would obviously need to NOT include any telemetry updates or such like.

Just my thoughts!

I had a look on the article today and noticed they've now removed any reference to NIC issues.

So, does this mean they've fixed it? Or, they're just not acknowledging that there are any issues with NIC? I can't install this update until they fix it, because it wiped out my wireless card last time I installed it.

Some more info would be nice MS!

This is just another reason supporting my decision to stop installing MS updates after January 2018. I'm so fed up with MS!
I never used to advocate skipping security updates, however, lately I've been seriously considering this myself!

I lost my internet with this update after a couple of days. First I'm barely a novice on these kinds of problems, but I found an article that I followed. I unplugged the power to my modem and router for two minutes and plugged them back it. I got my internet back. I'm sharing this just in case it might help someone.
