Thumbnails loading time is excruciatingly painful

Using Windows 7 on both my workstation at work and PC at home, pictures in the Extra Large Icons or Large Icons mode load like lightning (I mean, instantaneously) at home but takes an extremely long time, with the status bar at the top of Windows Explorer crawling every time on my workstation. I have enabled and set the icon cache size in the registry to 4096, and customized folder properties to Pictures on my workstation, to no avail. What amazes me is that at home, the thumbnails load like lightning!

There are a number of reasons why this might occur, such as, how much RAM is installed, how many programs you have opened at any given time, how full the hard drive is. Your System Specs need to be updated so we can get a lot of this info.

Comparing your home computer with an at work computer is not a fair comparison as the work computer is specifically designed for work applications & not the sort of applications that a home one would have.

Thanks for the response. I will test it out with no apps open next time I am at work. They both have 8 GB of RAM. Ironically, the faster one - my home machine, has only 8.3 GB free on the C: drive while the workstation has 137 GB free! The workstation hardware is 4 generations newer than my home machine. Considering it is a business machine, the workstation should be equipped to handle far more than my home PC. So, I am at a loss. I wonder if there are any other tweaks...

Yes.That was the first thing I did when this started happening.

If you want your work pc to be as fast as your home pc this may/may not help, but it recalls a similar situation for me. At the time I was paid a criminally-handsome hourly sum and did not mind one bit that my work pc was slow as molasses. However, this did seem unfair to my employer so I brought it to the attention of management. Soon, I am located to another workstation/office for a few days and when I return to my office my machine responds almost as fast as my thoughts. I drove cad/cae software for a living so I am thinking the modifications to the machine were hardware in nature.

System Cleaner

If you are using a System Cleaner (e.g. CCleaner, Glary Utilities,etc.) check that it isn't set to delete your "Thumbnails Cache".
