I got a Dell Studio 1555 (Windows Vista) laptop from a friend

1. I went to install my Windows 7 Ultimate ISO. In the partition section I deleted a couple and when I went to install it stated "BOOTMGR" missing

2. Finally I got back to the partition install section and followed windows directions to delete and create new, I crated a 40 GB partition, starting the install process, working GREAT UNTIL....... the very last installation part ""Completing Installation"" that took 3:30 hours, I went to unplug the power cord, shake things up and accidentally turned the laptop off

3. Turned it back on and I am in a constant loop stating this

"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered and unexpected error . Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation"

Restart and get all this

Setup is starting services....

Then the error, constant loop after restarting

Cannot even start in safe mode with command prmpt

Hi irishmike, welcome to Seven Forums,

Where did you get the ISO from?
Did you burn the ISO to a disc or USB?

It sounds like you need to start from scratch again.

When you get to the part when you get asked Where you want to install Windows?, highlight and delete each partition. This will leave you with Disk 0 Unallocated Space, click Drive options [advanced]. Highlight Disk 0 Unallocated Space and click New. Set the size to what you want and then continue with the installation.

I hope this helps!

Basically what this post stated. It's not going to work, you'll have to start over again.

My bad, ISO disk.

when I restart, only options are F2 boot, and it asks for password (Phoenix) and F12, boot options, when I boot from disk, the same runaround with the error, trying to finish install.......

Says "Setup is preparing services"

then goes right to the error

Then says "setup with start after restart", but goes back into the above"

I have tried things with Vista disk, XP, no disk.....

Did you delete the partitions that were already there?
Is the HDD a Legacy - MBR or UEFI - GPT?
It sounds like the installation disk might have got corrupted somehow!
I would suggest that you download another ISO.

I hope this helps!

"setup cannot continue due to the corrupted installation file"

Your installation media is corrupt.
Obtain a new Windows ISO at TechBench by WZT all editions (pro, home premium, etc. ) can be made available from any windows 7 iso - either by removing the ei.cfg file from the sources folder, or by using eicfg_removal_utility.zip
You want Windows 7 Ultimate x32 (only one that will download) then run the eicfg utility to access all the other versions.
You have to burn the ISO to DVD or USB you can't copy and paste.
DVD ImgBurn
USB Rufus 3.2 or Rufus 3.2 Portable

The report you posted indicates that Caution is advised. If you peruse the data, there are quiet a few issues pointing towards the beginnings of a failing drive. I usually suggest running SeaTools on the S.M.A.R.T Check and Short Drive Self-Test. If your drive passes both it's still usable.

Thanks

I plan on having this for a while maybe just spend $20 and get another drive?

So another drive should allow me to install Win 7 no issues I assume

Do you think the drive is the issue with the Win 7 install? I installed XP no issues

Hi irishmike,

If you have a good ISO installation disk or USB there shouldn't be any problems installing Windows 7, providing your HDD is OK of course!

I recommend that you do what Snick has suggested above first, before going any further!

Both Snick and myself said it sounded like the previous installation disk might have been corrupted somehow!

I did mention in a previous post about the partitions, and how they should ALL be deleted before the installation continues. Another way to accomplish this would be to use Diskpart during the installation process to clean the HDD, thereby deleting the partitions totally.

I hope this helps!

$20 for a drive? Maybe not that cheap but HDD prices are falling daily.
I'd run SeaTools on the drive to determine if it's still usable.
If you run chkdsk /r from the install media and run SeaTools, and it passes the tests I indicated previously, I don't see why a fresh Win7 ISO burned to USB or DVD would not install.

The error message you quoted previously is corrupt media. Corrupt DVDs are not as uncommon as one would think, they do in fact degrade over time and have a limited lifespan. Additionally, a scratch, gouge or simply a bit error can render the media unusable/corrupt. There are free programs that will scan your DVD for issues. Here's a link for the one I use.
VSO Inspector: free CD, DVD and Blu-ray scanning reporting tool

Personally, I'd forego checking the DVD (as the error message you received indicated corrupt media) and work with the ISO you downloaded and burn it to USB or DVD.

When you finish your install, download DISM++. It uses a different search engine that M$ update and provides you with choices of what KBs to install. It doesn't go through the shenanigans of installing a superseded update or require multiple reboots and days to install updates as M$ update does. Start it before you hit the hay and in the morning, your computer is updated with all the current updates, minus the ones you choose to not install. Kudos to SIW2 for the tip!
